Just thought I'd give a heads up. The D200 is on sale at Best Buy.com for $599. Pretty good deal. I just ordered one to go along with my D3s to have a third backup body and something lightweight for remotes or the crop if needed.

Might be a good pickup for someone else so I thought I'd pass it along.

quick! gimme your thoughts on this:

I'm either buying the d400 or d700 after they release the specs on the d400.

right now, i'm considering buying the d200, then selling my d80 on ebay to recoup some of the $$...

What does OT think of this??

    pros:

d200 would be brand new - no shutter clicks
PC sync cord for studio work
    d200 is a better body
d400 and 700 will use CF cards, d80 uses SD

    cons:

d80 is gripped - gripping d200 would cost more $$ (unless the grip works on both... doubt it.)
CF cards - have to dump my SD cards...
$600 i'd have to explain to the wife.

Gimme your feedback. I'm on teh fence.

but, tbh jared, unless you need the speed and ruggedness of the d200 id probably just say stick with the d80. just sound likes it might not be worth all the trouble for ya(w/ wife going wtf and switching to new media) when the IQ is gonna probably be about the same

    So here's what I did:

wife wanted the d80 - said I couldn't sell it.

    Bought the d200

    bought the grip

bought 3x8gb CF cards for free (see other thread)

    bought the Tokina 11-16mm 2.8

Everything should be here between tomorrow and Friday...

    woohoo! new toys!

Damn. Baller. How much does a D300 go for though? I mean, isn't the D80 and the D200 practically the same camera, sensor-wise? I feel like instead of getting the ultrawide you could've put that money together with the 599 and gotten a 300. Congrats either way, I just wouldn't have bought a 200.

Yeah... She was on the fents, but she's wanted a camera to play with for a while now... So she jumped on the chance to get the 80, and I signed another wedding over the weekend, so I grabbed the 11-16 with the deposit $$ from that...

I think the wide angle will help me with the wedding stuff more than the 300 would have. The 300 only gives you one more stop of usable iso, which isn't a big deal. I don't have much of a problem printing 8x10's of iso 1600 with the d80, and for the weddings I never need to print larger than that.

I'm really waiting for the d400 to come out, at which time I'll have the 200 as the 2nd body, and the 400 as my main. the 400 and 200 are much closer than the 400 and 80 are, and 600 compared to 1300 or 1400 was too much to pay for one stop.

Right now, the goal for me is to maximize my profit to expense ratio. I needed a 2nd body and an ultra wide. But my work gets nothing but compliments, and the quality doesn't ever get questioned, so how much would a better sensor get me in terms of profit?

at least thats how I looked at it....

I've thought about this as it'd give me a 2nd body to use with another lens. Less lens swapping is a good thing:o.

Damn this really is a good deal, I'd buy it if the ISO wasn't completely unusable above 800. :hs:

It would come in handy for weddings/ events to have another body...

Yeah, from what I thought, the D200 was useless past that too...that's the reason it would stop me. The build quality is badass but I feel like at this point it's pretty old technology ibelitest

One of the guys I shoot weddings with never uses his above 400 ISO. Takes the D300 to about 1600, 2000ish.

It's the same sensor as the d80, and I've printed iso 1600 myself with it, AND had a print from WHCC at 1600 come back that are WELL within even MY acceptable limit. I seriously don't know what it is with you guys and noise. Either you're seriously under exposing your shots and introducing a horrid amount of noise through post processing, or you all want things to look great under microscopes.

Consider this: side by side, the d200/d80 high iso shots DESTROY film at those same iso's. Yet, we consider 800/1600 speed film acceptable for wedding photography, but not the higher quality, less noisy digital images.

On a side note, I've found myself actually INTRODUCING noise to most of my images. The few critisizms I have gotten from my post work was that it was too clean, and people could tell it was digital. Once I introduced noise into it and broke up the crisp clear edges and lines, people found it much easier on the eyes. It's come to my attention that the majority of people actually still hate digital photography, and that 'digital look'.

    cash in hand > debt

(i knew none of you would approve of this decision, because we're all gear whores at heart. and believe me, I'd LOVE a d700. This was a business decision. )
