Taking panning shots at the drift events is a little more difficult than other motorsport events since the drivers don't always take the same line, so the pre-focus method doesn't always work. Pretty amazing how the drivers are side-by-side at 90+ mph and can control it the whole way through the apex.

Yeah, I used AI servo mode for most of the pics. I still got some nice shots using the pre-focus method on the 20D (16-35 for the wide angle pan shots, none pictured above) since the 20D AF mechanism isn't as good as the 1D MKII's. Here are a coupe of the pan shots with the 20D

This is the slower section of the course so there's not as much background blur since they're only going ~ 20-25 mph.

how did the tiger racing cars do? Sammy in a white 13 coupe and Channon "A" in a 180sx. I think they both qualified well on Friday.

the Miata had a stuck throttle plate (they were using a bungee cord) lol

I heard he had to turn the car on and off to help slow it down.

They sorta do. A few years back I went to a drift show at Mosport. It was pretty cool, but it was just a demo, not a competition.

You can still pre focus. Looking at the exif those are at like 24mm. You should have huge dof there and even be close to the hyperfocal distance. Dial up the iso a bit and a little smaller aperture and with a wide at that distance, getting focus from the front of the track to the rear shouldnt be a problem at all. Pre focus on the most popular line and you should have plenty of dof to get any other line in as well.

I was able to pre-focus with the wide angle set up and still get good pan shots but the keeper rate with the 70-200 wasn't as good, though I did get some nice shots but if they ran a bad line, they were off my focus point by 5-10 feet in some areas.

Gotcha. A little harder with the longer focal length. However, again, in that case, next time, try to bump the ISO up, get a smaller aperture and increase the dof and you should be able to get enough dof to cover the track and take into account a variation in line.

Just something to think about next time. Pics look good though. I'm not a fan of drifting at all, but these show a very good combination of speed and movement.

That's the only D1 event on the East Coast this year. Formula D will be in West Virginia June 2 and then again in NJ 9/8 (tentative date)

Yeah, I do this with autocross events to get the aperture around f/14-20, though I usually try and keep the aperture around f/10 to minimize diffraction.
