I'm seriously considering purchasing a handgun. I'm reading the VA state police website for the process in which I can obtain a concealed weapons permit. I just want to know, first hand, how difficult or easy it is to get one in NoVA.

Also, some noob questions like a recommendation on a weapon and which classes are best to attend.

I've never used a handgun, ever. I've just used shotguns and rifles for hunting, but that's about it. I have a current VA hunting license, but i took my hunter safety class in California about 10 years ago.

any help would be appreciated. thanks guys :wavey:

i want one for target shooting, but mostly personal defense

    how about these classes:

    - what do you guys think about em?

Oh and I'm looking at a SA XD in .45ACP - my budget would be like $500 - $600

I'm in the same boat. I'm trying to pick one out and have seen it's pretty easy in VA to own a fire arm . Pretty easy actually. There is a gun show at the Dulles Expo Center in like 2 weeks. Might want to check it out. Just google the nations gun show or national gun show for more info.

    good luck.

I honestly didn't know that but i figure it's a good place to see what's out there, feel various hand guns in your hands and go from there.

IMO there are better options. The XDM is kind of neat if you want to stick with an XD. Any reason for .45?

I have an XD 45 Service and XD 40 SC (daily carry). I prefer those over my G17. I bought the G17 b/c I wanted a 9mm for target shooting and I figured I'd go with a Glock this time around. I find it easier to break down the XD's for cleaning and my fingers dont line up well with the finger grooves on the newer glocks.

I think the XDMs are over priced for what they offer, but to each his own.

You can do that at a gun shop and a gun shop will likely be less crowded.

i read a pretty good review on the XDM in 9x19, but they said from personal experience the xd in .45ACP was a more accurate chamber.

but like i said, i don't know anything about handguns so the information i get here and elsewhere is invaluable

I was looking at picking up a P22 or .380 for plinking today and there were several gun noobs in both stores I went to. It seems this election has brought everybody into a buying frenzy. Most of the people didnt even understand the concept of how a non-revolver handgun operates. You wont be alone and you wont ask any question they havent heard. Its their job to answer those questions so you feel comfortable with what your handling and actually buy it.

Yeah, gun magazines are not great sources of information, assuming that's where you read it.

9mm is a fine round, many people chose it over .45 because you can carry twice the capacity in a magazine. Any modern day service gun in any caliber will more than likely out shoot the shooter. For personal defense, ammunition selection has a lot more to do with tissue damage than caliber for the most part, assuming you stick with 9mm, .40, .45 etc

Yes, especially for target practice. That shit adds up quickly.

Also, twice as many rounds wont be twice as heavy, but it will still be heavier to carry.

It's almost half the price of .45

You get more practice in and to me, it's more enjoyable to shoot than .40 or .45 (nice 1911s excluded).
