I want to understand why some people cut themselves. What makes them do it?? I understand its with being emotional but why take such a drastic measure? Could it be an attention method?

I didn't know where to place this question so I figured this might be the best place to do it.

i always felt it was rooted in the need for attention. but then again, the act of inflicting wounds on yourself releases the body's natural painkillers (endorphins) and it could be that the cutters in question are just getting addicted to that feeling...the rush that comes after cutting.

Best said by a college of mine. The physical pain takes away the emotional pain, mental pain is worse then real pain , if you therefore cut in yourself you focus on something else.

These people lack love in their lives, its an outlet of accumulated stress that is expressed in injuring themselves.

I think they do it for a number of reasons, some of which are unknow n even to them. Usually, I should think it is when the hurt goes somewhere past pain and confusion is paramount.

attention is such a myth. Cutting is such a shameful thing... most who do it hide their scars very carefully.... Usually when one is in that state they often want anything BUT attention.

the phyiscal pain is MUCH harsher than the mental pain... the idea is to take the focus off the mind for the physical.

It's akin to taking drugs or drinking... it supresses the pain in the mind, if not just for a time.

I found out my ex girlfriend was a cutter at a point in her life. I'm worried that my breakup with her may have re-opened some old wounds.

Her room-mate told me a particularly scary story: I guess it wasn't too long after we broke up, and my ex was sitting at the table drinking from a glass. Apparently she just up and launched the glass at the wall, breaking it into shards. Her roommate (the one telling me the story) told her to stop being a baby and to pick it up. My ex knelt down and grabbed some of the glass, but instead of throwing it in the garbage she started going crazy and cutting her chest with it.

Now, I'd love to think that this story's not true, but I know that my ex had cut herself in the past. I've never discussed it with her, but I know for a fact that the scars on her arms are indeed from cutting.

    It's scary stuff.

Good comment and I agree, lack of love isn't always the problem.

SOMETIMES it is, as one feels worthless if not loved, but in cases like that, depression usually reigns supreme.

Just out of sheer curiosity, what makes it scary? We see blood/guts/gore on TV, in the news/read about it...and somehow that seems impersonal.
Perhaps it gets scarier when someone you know is doing it...

    Just wondering.

Just scary to know that someone is at a mental state in which they would inflict pain on themselves.

I mean, there are bullriders and there are cutters...
