Assume the same person, with everything else constant (lifting routine, diet, genetics) wanted to lose 1lb a week running a 500 calorie deficit every day. Maintenance for him is 3000 calories. If he a) Ate 3000 calories per day and burned 500 calories doing cardio, OR b) Ate 2500 calories a day and didn't do cardio, would there be a difference in the 10 lbs he lost after 10 weeks, in terms of muscle/fat ratio, or a difference in how he'd look or would it be exactly the same?

Well within this example, I pulled the numbers out of my ass, but hypothetically, is there a difference in the result?

I don't think there is a difference in cardio but i think there IS in lifting.

I think if you create a deficit through cardio as opposed to just eating less you'll be increasing your cardiovascular endurance and general fitness as well as lose fat.

    .

i agree. it'll come easier with the diet and the weight will come off faster. it'll also be a lot easier than doing cardio to burn off 500 calories.

bottome line, the weight would be the same but you'd be increasing your general fitness by doing the cardio.

    In my experience:

Dropping 500 cals from diet will get rid of the fat faster and give way to more noticeable abs development.

Dropping 500 cals through cardio burning will be more more beneficial as a whole since you are on deficit and increasing your cardio vascular/metabolic components at the same time.

In my mind, I say do both and reap their benefits. But burning 500 cals in one cardio session is harder than most think.

From experience, I feel that losing weight through activity rather than cutting down the foot intake makes it easier to keep your strength.

the best answer is both, but your question is a good one. I would say it's easier doing it through diet, you can slam down 500cals in 2 mins, but it takes 45mins to burn that off doing cardio but doing the cardio is good for you in terms of health.

If you rely on just a caloric deficit you are more likely to plateu quicker since your body will soon adapt to you not changing your intake and all variables holding constant.

Not to mention cardio can help get your metabolism going.
