So I'm around 220 pounds and 6'4"... I've been bulking for a while but I'm getting too fat, so I've decided to cut before I have to get all my pants retailored.

How does this look for a routine designed to maintain mass and increase strength (hopefully)? Similar to the Bill Starr routine... I had good success with Christophers' routine before, but want to work in some more olympic lifts.

    Monday
    Squat 5x5
    Power Clean or Deadlift 5x5
    Bench 5x5
    Weighted Abs 3x10

    Wednesday
    OH Squats 4x10
    Bent over row 5x5
    Dips 4x10
    Lat raises or Curls 3x10

    Friday
Snatch or Clean & Jerk 5x3
    Squat or Front Squat 5x5
    Bench or OH Press 5x5
    Calves 3x10

Where two movements are shown, I'm going to alternate those every week to keep things interesting.

how about a pic, help us out a little as to what we are working with, also wtf would you cut on a routine like that. You will need all the cals an strength for it? Im baffled

I'll try to get one when I get home. My stats right now are 335 squat, 375 dead, and 205 bench (I suck at benching).

So you're saying this routine is too intense for cutting? Should I get rid of one of the compounds on each day and maybe do some cardio instead?

Have you ever tried doing that type of routine before while bulking? It's hard enough then, I can't imagine trying to do something like that while being in a deficit

i dont know about intense but thats a routine you would want for gaining weight an mass...not cutting..not saying you wont get cut but its not the best way to do it

So what sort of routine would you recommend? I thought a routine of mostly compound movements and lower reps was the way to go when cutting? If I changed everything to 3x5, you think that would be more doable?

i was thinking about using this routine for my cut starting in jan. (current: 5'11 215 slight bulk mode @2800+ cals/day)

if it's not a good routine for a cut then i'm all ears as to one that would help me lose 10-15 lbs without sacrificing much lbm.

diet an high protein will do that, the routine is for building muscle and will burn cals to a point. Its just not something i would use to cut since its so effective for building mass in most people.

I guess im trying to say is...diet and cardio and training in general will get you cut or help lose fat...but certain routines needs some real fuel to be done right an effective. Im having a hard time trying to make my point i think

i understand the idea that this routine needs alot of cals to supplement the workload but what sort of routine would be good for a cutting diet then? higher reps/lower volume?

say anything besides cardio and i'll be happy

Lol cardio is the best way to get there because it allows you to not diet as strict(imo) I would try a higher volume and lower weight(but not light) It will help burn more cals as well. Maybe a 10x5? You're cutting so i wouldnt expect to build alot or make strength gains...thats the point i was looking for

Here's a back pic... I look smaller than I thought (keep in mind I'm 6'4"), maybe I'll wait a few months to cut. Just getting tired of the lack of definition and the pudgy waistline.

I did day 1 of that routine as written last night, though not in a caloric deficit, and I was dying by the end of the power cleans... I'd probably pass out trying to do that while cutting. Forgot how tough these kinds of routines are.

  15. studies have shown that when in a deficit, restricting cals is less catabolic than adding more cardio

So, any more recommendations? Maybe cut the volume in half and do some cardio instead? Or am I nuts for thinking I should cut?

I'd say give it a try. What I do is somewhat similar, and I survive when trying to lose weight.

Are you thinking about actually competing in weightlifting, or just incorporating the Oly lifts?

Nah, they're just fun to do. I do them because doing stuff like that keeps me coming to the gym regularly.

Plus, I like how everyone stops what they're doing and stares at me when I do a C&J or a snatch. I even had some hot blonde girl on the leg press stop and ask me what I was doing when I was doing power snatches. "wow, it looks so powerful!" :naughty:
