I just used a razor blade and took my time to make it look good. I'd under cut it and make the gun snug rather than cut too much out.

ive read the best way is to trace an outline of your gun on a large piece of paper, then put the paper on the foam and cut the foam with a razor or exacto knife.

I wasn't terribly concerned about it looking PERFECT, so I traced mine with a dark blue sharpie, then cut out around it. looks pretty good, but not perfect...this was before I cut out for like...an assload of pistols to also go in the case (before I got a pelican for just pistols, naturally)

When I order replacement foam, I'll be tracing on paper and cutting that way.

trace the rifle (the way you want it shown on the side of foam facing up in the case) on the other side of the foam, cut from there.

We don't agree alot, but I agree here. A guy on arf posted a little tutorial on them a while back and a big jig he made to use for cutting there. It looked great.

It's what I used on all of mine and works awesome. Just went to Walmart and bought one, used it and then returned it.

Electric carving knife or hot wire knife after having frozen the foam. Personal experience.

    Proud 1720 owner.

I think I'll get some poster board and make the outlines on it. If I do this correctly, I can get my rifle, USPc, two magazines for each (maybe more?), PPE, and dessicant in nicely

I was sure Pelican offered pre cut foam. Our pelican cases we bought for deployment were special ordered with precut foam for out M-16A2 and beretta 9mm along with cutouts for magazines, slings, etc.

I just cut mine with a kitchen knife because I didn't really care how it looked. It's not that big of a deal and no one is going to inspect the inside of your case.
