what if you just polish out a car without any wax or sealant? will the shine last and is it bad for the clearcoat?

The paint will shine but it won't be protected. No, the shine won't last and no wax means no sacrificial barrier between the elements and the clearcoat.

...and an element never forgets. :mamoru:

    Hijack!

In terms of protection, I have a friend who has been painting for over 30 years, and basically thinks wax is bad for the paint because it doesn't "let it breathe". I understand not waxing while it's curing, but does he have any merit in his train of thought, or is he just an old bastard who doesn't know any better?

Body shops and 99% of most painters don't know their ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to the maintenance of paint. They can paint, but beyond that I wouldn't let them touch my car or take any of their advice.

paint doesnt need to breathe.. i think if it does, it'll have little micro holes in them but i think the clearcoat on top already.. umm.. sufficates the paint.

I'm finding that out already in my first full week!

"Dealership said it has clearcoat and not to wax it."

That was from on my first customers on his new Dodge 2500.

    Ha Ha...
