What was up with that fight? :dunno:

Cung Le looked good and all with the punching and kicking, but fryklund looked like he just gave up before the thing even started.

watching the fight i kept thinking that it had to be set up because almost any other fighter out there wouldve went for a freakin' takedown or something.

    what did you think?

or is cung le just that good? :noes:

He looked pretty good to me. They are talking him vs Shamrock for late this year.

Le is gob-smackingly amazing on the feet. I'd hope he's training nigh on 100% for the ground game and takedown stuffing for when he fights someone who comes in who will do anything to get him to the ground and keep it there.

His skills can't be doubted, and he's beaten everyone they've put in front of him so far, so we can't ask much more of him.

Fryklund definitely screwed up with the Andy Wang mentality though. I think he wanted to try and pick apart Le on the feet to break him mentally then take it to the ground, but it clearly wasn't working and he was too stubborn to change his gameplan.

He has some pretty slick training partners at AKA.

I was getting so pissed during that fight. I really wanted to see Le get taken down. His standup is sexy, but I really want to see how he does in other dimensions. His reluctance to ever take his opponent down makes me doubt him. I mean, I love it when a fighter has mastered one aspect of the fight game like CroCop has (not saying that Le is close to that level), but I think being well-rounded like Fedor is far more impressive and important.

I don't know I watch the CroCop Wanderli (sp?) fight on that pride show the opther night. CroCop looked pretty decent on the ground when put to it. Also look at Chuck, he has a decent ground game but never uses it because he is so good on his feet. Why play in a area that is not going to give you the best chance?

I'd definitely say that Le is a Crocop-level striker. He's absolutely slick.

I wouldn't say that Cung is reluctant to take someone down. You could say the same about Crocop not shooting in on people. Why take it to the ground when you have a huge advantage on the feet?

If you take someone to the ground in an effort to prove something, you're just as bad as if you're stubborn enough to keep it on the feet to prove something - a la Fryklund, Wang etc.

as much as i hate Cung Le, his striking looked impressive

however, as much as i hate Cung Le, given his history, part of me wants to call shennanigans

Cung Le was fucking brilliant, his striking was fast, lethal and to the point.

He came, he saw, he conquered.

And if you have suspicions that this fight was a work, put them to rest, I have reliable sources that have confirmed that Fryklund brought his "A" game to the ring, and gave 110% effort in this fight. .

Cung Le actually has really good wrestling. I dont know if he has any BJJ experience to compliment it though, if he starts training he he can be a really great fighter. Hes got a TON of talent and works hard, all he needs is experience. He really needs to fight a good ground fighter, he'll probably get beat on the ground but it would be a good lesson for him and im sure he'd become much stronger after it.

I wouldn't be surprised if Fryklund got a bonus for not trying to take Cung Le down..

I would not come close to saying that, but I do agree with the takedown comments.

    nobody's doubting his athletic ability

however, his history shows possible worked fights and an inclination to take easy fights to preserve his record

I wouldn't exactly say Tony Fryklund is an "easy" fight at this level of his career (only 4-0 btw). His next fight is not exactly "easy" either... Frank Shamrock.

much of his career involved fighting cans, including those who've NEVER fought (much less trained) with san shou rules

and this was later in his career too, despite Cung being a san shou champion

it's like Fedor fighting Zuluzinho, the Giant Silva, etc. at the peak of his career

but only in sambo tournaments when they have never trained in sambo before.

cung le comes off as a cheeky twat to me. I will for once be routing for frank shamrock if their fight actually happens.
