I've seen viruses and spyware that do that because they don't want you running task manager to see or kill them. Some will also do the same thing when you try to run msconfig.exe.

Well, there are only two places most things like that would start.

    First, check your registry.

    Click on:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    SOFTWARE
    Microsoft
    Windows
    Current Version
    Run

Make a backup of that folder. If you don't know how to do this, make sure the RUN folder is highlighted, go to File (or registry depending on your system), and EXPORT. Name the file and save it somewhere.

In that pane on the right, you shouldn't have too much starting up. If something is starting up in the C:\Windows\System32 or C:\Windows, then I'd be leary. List what you have on here, or shoot me a PM and I can help ya out if you get confused.

The other place to check is your Services Panel.

    Click Start > Run
    Type: Services.msc
Go through the list there and see what you have. Again, you're looking for whatever doesn't look right. Just as well, you can post them here or PM me with the ones you suspect before shutting them down.

Either way, you should be able to kill it so you can just reboot and finish cleaning your system.

    Hope that helps a little.

Here are some screenshots. As you can see, my RUN line is very limited. One item. Also, in services, you can see, I have C-Dilla :hs: I hate that damn thing

CDilla is a license sharing program that 3dS needs in order to run. DNS78 is a driver for the modem in that comp.

Find your msconfig.exe file. Copy it to the desktop and then change the name to msconfig.com. Then you can go through the list to find the offending program.
