out of all of my pics, my friend thought this was the best. i don't like it very much myself. it was my fourth time shooting and i didn't like any of the pics that day. does it suck or am i being too self critical?

The color balance makes me sick, but its a good exposure and use of line. No real centerpoint of intrest and the pier would be better if you're eye would really follow it all the way down, instead my eye is drawn to the underside

That's a little better, unless you were going for the über magenta.

what did you do in post proccessing? Besides the whole color balance thing, you must have really lightened the shadows. Since you exposed for the highlights (look at the sunny part of the main support beam of the pier and how you have some detail in the sky), the shadows on a sunny day should have been almost black, but you have quite a bit of detail there. Severe levels or shadow/highlight?

dodged the underside of the pier and color balanced. i wanted to get the sand not so bright. i noticed i tend to over color my pics, so i'll be sure to watch that next time.

i think its great! B&W makes it look sweet! to me, the focus isn't on any one thing. The photo focuses on the details in the sand, the imperfections of the wood on the pier, the light post with the bird on it and the depth.

Too many people are worried about a focal point when that isn't the only thing that matters. For lack of a better line, you gotta look at the entire picture.

yeah b&w looks a lot better. i let it focus on everything because most pier shots have everything in focus :dunno:

The black and white version works very well:) . The symmetry and balance of it is a nice touch.

It looks like a good portrait background. Find a person and put him/her in that location and then snap a pic. Bring back results.
