so im a photo newb in that i just recently began to take photography as more than a way to document, but as art as well.

im using a canon powershot sx10 is (not an slr :wtc:, but i needed video recording capabilities without spending >$1200. so i settled for a high end non-slr). im editing with lightroom. i can still play withaperture, shutter speed, iso etc so its a good middle step between a compact and a full slr for me.

ive been studying lots of beginners guides to's and this is what ive come up with. so please tell me anything that may be helpful, you may be as brutal as you need to. tell me whats up in terms of composition and editing. what do you like about certain pictures? what dont you like about certain pictures? what wouldve made a picture better, which had more potential? etc....

    thanks! :wavey:

I think it's more like a photo album from a nice trip than a thread for comments. There are way too many pictures for us to comment on the quality of them, and obviously some of them are really not good enough to receive individual critique, although they can relay an important part of the trip.

I have the same thing when doing trip pictures, a part of them (most) are there because they show a place or a time, but otherwise they are not "hang to the wall" material. Only a very, very few are actually good enough that I would remotely consider printing.

    So back to your pictures:
1-4-10-21-32-40-41-58-63-66-67-76-77 should be simply removed from the list here (of course they do belong to you album for friends/family and yourself), they are either boring, off focus or simply not really good (but again they might be an important part of the trip but here we don't really care)

The few ones that stood out for me are
11-37-42-50 (if the heads are not as cropped as it shows here)-52-56

the rest are ok, but not great. I probably have missed some very good ones, but seriously looking at that many pictures your end up browsing them.

I would leave only a few on here (I'd say 10 MAX) so that people can actually put comments, you have way too many now.

    dont bother posting those that:

    are out of focus
    underexposed
showing your shadow in the foreground
    are repeats of others

Pick 4-5 that you like the best and work from there.

    It's like all threads..

You really expect me to critique all that shit by you?

:werd: You seem to be on the right track, just keep doing what you're doing. I think that the best tip I could give you is to pay more attention to framing the shot when you take it. It looks like you are taking a lot of "ok" pictures and then salvaging with good cropping in post. You seem to have a good eye when it comes to the post crop... try to apply that to the framing of the shot when you are actually taking the picture. I do understand however that using a p&s (non-interchangable lens) does limit your framing options. If that's what's limiting you, then disregard my post and keep up the good work.

well the thing is that i dont really know which of my pictures would be considered good to a trained eye. i know what i like, and i chose these 77 out of about 1500, but from there i dont know how to shave off more.

The answer was mostly given previously:

those 77 are probably a great photo album, but not the ones that are top notch.

    Not bad for a p & s. I love 17, 35, 41 & 52. If they were taken with a DSLR they could have been epic.
