Is the software that comes with these things really required?

Or is it maybe like cd burners, where you can just do it with windows?

I'm going to be setting it up tonight for my girlfriend, and I hate
to install some crappy software on my computer if I don't have to.

Try plugging in the MP3 player without the software installed and see if it shows up as a USB mass storage device. If it does, then you should be all good. If not, you might need the software.

I have never used the software included with my Creative Zen. I simply use WMP.

I was mainly concerned with whether I needed it or not to do simple drag and drop of files.

The manual has nice big bold letters proclaiming
"CAUTION DO NOT" connect your player to your computer before setting up the software.

I knew it didn't make sense, that's why I posted in here.

Sure enough it works just perfectly without their software.
Which probably has a bunch of adware in it too. The fuckers.
