Creating a Database...

Discussion in 'OT Technology' started by SiliconTrance, Sep 19, 2003.

  1. Ok, I'm basically going into this blindly....

I was wondering what i would need to do to start learning how to use a mysql database. like what I should download, what sites i should go to to learn stuff, things like that...

I already have apache installed on my computer and running for php.

If you all could at least start me in the right direction, that would be great, thanks!

hmmm....do yourself a favor and get an old computer install linux with apache / php / mysql and get a good sql book and a good php book. Don't try to do this stuff on M$ shit cause the experience isn't the same.

Depends on how deep you want to go. First things first, get MySQL installed on something. Get a good PHP book that has an entire chapter on MySQL. Learn it. Create apps. Profit!

  6. Sweet, thanks guys.

The reason i'm doing this is because a friend and I are starting a web design firm and I need to create a database of customers that can be displayed to him and I and we can see how many projects we currently have pending, what the percents are, what sections they are for, how much they are paying, etc.

I'll take all of your advice. thanks guys

Honestly it doesn't matter whether you install MySQL on windows or Unix, it is going to be the same thing once you are in it.

But you know I would be partial to having it installed on a Linux box. :big grin:

That book looks really good. I am going to have to go out and pick it up.. I wish they had some of these things online.. I can't seem to find anything.

  10. some basic things to know:

    database datatypes (specific to database)
    relationships
    keys (primary, foreign)
    forms of normalization

get a handle on those and you'll be on your way to knowing how to build and develop against any relational database management system.
