my 17 y/o nephew runs track and he's pretty good, i think, though i don't know much about track.

he went to indoor regionals and districts but missed states because he "had a bad start". he says he runs 80 meter (i think) so having a bad start doesnt allow him any time to make up for it with speed.

anyway he's now training for outdoor track and he's on teh creatine. he was working at best buy, taking AP classes, and only running track 2x a week and he still managed to almost make it to states.

now he's quit teh Best Buy so he can train more so he'll definately make it to states but the question i have: should he be taking creatine?

all i know about creatine (or all i think i know):

    gives you some strength gains
    makes you retain water

logic tells me that if it helps him retain water = he gains weight
gaining weight for track star = not good

so, creatine strength gains + weight gain = cancel each other out?

i told him he might want to consider laying off the creatine a few days/week before a race so he'll lose the water weight.

what's the right advice to give him? i dont know wtf i'm talking about when it comes to creatine OR track/running (i know less about those than i do about lifting :big grin: ) so i dont want to give him any wrong advice.

    halp

cliffs: 17 y/o track star nephew needs to know if he should bother with creatine or not

I've ran track and the first 10 yards makes or breaks a race. Creatine is just a supplement that'll help aid his muscles during training. But it's all about technique and consistency. Instead of concentrating on what supplements to take, have him focus on his training to explode out of the blocks. Plyometrics, band resistance training, parachute runs are some of the best ways to develop the core muscles to get him out of the blocks faster. Also incorporate some squats, deadlifts, and cleans to his workouts. There's a reason why short track sprinters are jacked.

dunno if he's "jacked" but he's solid muscle. kid is in damn good shape.

i'll tell him about the block work. i'm not sure if he's bad off the blocks or if he just had a bad start meaning he screwed something up. i think he lost focus. he's got major issues with being able to tune shit out around him when he needs to be concentrating.

i'm just thinking about the problems of weight gain. water retention = worthless weight gain = heavier and harder to run. right?

I gain a whopping 2-3 lbs and creatine works great for me. If it does actually effect his sprinting performance it will be small.

creatine is most beneficial in sprinting due to the nature of the energy source provided by creatine on a cellular level. Long distance runners need not apply, but sprinters, hell yes.

Some studies have found an improvement and others have found no enhancement.

It helps shuttle water into your muscles, but it doesn't make you retain water to that extent. Any excess creatine that's not absorbed gets flushed out of your system anyways. Like I said, if he's training hard and running tons, he's not going to retain water to the extent that it hinders his performance.
