So I met this girl a week or so ago. I was talking to her on the phone and I said something about when I came off active duty. Rest of the conversation went something like this:

Her: You were on active duty?
Me: Yes, Army. For 4 years.
Her: I don't like the military
    Me: Why?
Her: My ex was in the military and cheated on me with some girl on his ship
Me: What does that have to do with the military?
Her: Because he was away and I guess we wanted different things
Me: That didn't answer my question

She goes on to say how her ex had cheated a bunch of times on his girlfriend before her, which still didn't answer my question. I made a point about I'd be in a lonely world if I thought all female college students cheated because my ex cheated on me.

I hate it when people stereotype the military like that. :madfawk:

Stereotypes suck but unfortunately they exist.

I think I got it through her head that I'm National Guard and its different, but she definitely lost cool points by that line of thinking.

I got that a LOT when I told people I signed up. I'd hear "WHY?" followed by their remarkably stupid opinion of the armed forces. One guy hates the Marines because his whole family is in it except him, and he doesn't even want to join. One chick hates the military because her sister is in ithe Air Force, and she hates her sister. Another guy hates it because recruiters bug him on the way to his classes. :mb:

I generally just tell people like that that the reason I joined was so I could travel to cool places and kill babies.

Yes - unless they have been coated in baby powder. In that case you just have to resort to your bayonet.

But then it gets really messy, because the babies will stick to the bayonet and you would have to knock them off with your foot

We were on our equivalent to the MOS course (Infantry) and it was our 2nd or 3rd day in, and this Sgt. was making us practice weapon drill and whenever we were in the firing stage, he'd call out "Shooting Babies, Shooting Babies, Shooting Mothers..."

And then he went on about how we'd have to kill babies, so if we didn't want to, we should change trades right now. That was a strange day. :dunno:

Thats what I did too. I wouldn't have wanted to spend the first couple years of marriage battling trust issues while she gets dependant on military benefits. Saw that happen before...

i agree with this stereotype actually. When i was overseas i cheated on my girlfriends every chance i got, so did everyone else i knew. Hell everyone had someone back home, yet everyone was having sex with everyone else. It was just the way it was.

I usually tell people that the reason I joined was to save sea turtles and then they think I'm cool.
