    probably more help here...the usuals

    -update and scan for viruses
    -update and scan for spyware/malware/trojans
    -turn off unused services
    -defrag
-uninstall or disable programs that start when windows starts
-use "custom swap file size" and don't allow windows to manage it
-(if you already did that) increase the swap file size
-make sure you have more than 15% free disk space (I believe it's 15%...might be 10%)
-reboot every once in a while

reinstall windows...set it to how you like it...then use norton ghost and create an image.
each month, reimage your drive (saving a backup of anything new you created to another drive obviously)

also, i'm amazed at how people are running xp pro with like 256 mb of ram and they have about 30 things running in the background and they complain that its slow....idiots
goto run, type in msconfig. goto the startup tab and uncheck everything...unless you have antivirus running, then keep that checked.

you don't need instant messager, office find fast, quicktime, realplayer, misc printer image crap running in the background
