Latley my computer has been laging. I ran Adware, Spy Sweeper, Spyware Doctor, Registry Mechanic, Spyware Search & Destroy, Kaspersky, burn test (don't remember the name of the prboram), etc. I pull up the Windows Task Manger and the CPU usage is higher then the ram and it goes up to 100% at times. However, the ram is going maybe at 400 MB or so. I don't really want to format my hard drive because I don't have all of my back-up cds. Is there a way to see if it is the hardware or software that is causing the problem? :noes:

    Asus p4c800-e deluxe
    P4 3.0ghz Prescott 800 MHz fsb
    Kingston 256x4 DDR SDRAM
    Antec 400W power supply

Hit control+alt+delete and click the processes tab. Go down the list and see which program is using the most of your CPU.

60% it'll just be some useless program that came with your printer, but it may be a virus.

Look at the name of the program and see if you recognize it. If you don't, try googling the name of the program. After you google it, you should know if it's a virus/useless.

Ending the process should fix your problem. If the next time you boot, the program is running again, Go to start>run and type "msconfig" then click the startup tab, and uncheck the program that hogs your CPU.

Should be smooth sailing from then on.

Post your HijackThis log (use the CODE forum tag) and I'll give it a look. There are sites that can analyze your log as well and tell you about 90% of the good and bad, but there are usually things it doesn't know what to do with that are bad and will put stuff back.

Microsoft AntiSpyware does wonders, get that and run a scan or 2...should find any malware.

If it's just a program hogging your resources, go in and delete programs you don't use anymore. Sure, you can stop them from running on startup...but they are still installed and wasting HDD space. Might as well delete them and jsut keep the .exe or CD incase you need it later.

HijackThis is a program that scans your computer for sneaky bits of code that do devious things while you try to figure out what's wrong. The log is the file that displays the results of a scan.
