Right now i have a Thermaltake Volcanoo 11+ on my AMP 2600+ barton, and its way too loud and it does a horrible job of cooling the cpu, @ full speed it keeps the cpu @ 47 degrees C and @ around 48 db :ugh:

I have no experience with any other coolers except for stock amd ones. Can anyone recommend a bigger much quiter cooler?

    Some that I'd recommend:

    Swiftech MCX462-V - Socket A
    Thermalright SLK-900A - Socket A
    Thermalright SP-97 - Socket A

I have Coolermaster Aero 7+ adjustable speed.
All copper and blower style fan. It's pretty quiet.

What's your room temperature and case temp? Try to increase case ventilation. The temperature of CPU is affected significantly by case and ambient temp.

my motherboard temp is 33 C . my room temp is around 25-30 here 2. its bloody hot here and have no AC. The sides of the case aren't on either since the front case fan lead doesn't reach the motherboard fan connectlor. I think i am going to go with the Swiftech MCX462-V, it seems to be a nice heatsink although kinda expensive.

30°C room temperature definitely explains that CPU temp. Having the side off isn't necessarily good for cooling. If your case is designed properly, the air will be taken in from the lower side and lower front and pulled out into upper rear. If you have the side off, the air flow might not be that great over your components.

Are you using Artic Silver 5?? If not, go get some and then see if you need another HSF.

don't use Artic silver on an Athlon processor.

    Give me a good reason.

I wouldn't recommend AS II, because it's silicone based, but AS 5 isn't silicone based. The surface area is so small and dissipation is so high. You want to use something that gives you the best thermal conduction and Arctic silver/alumina is one of them.

The reason I don't recommended is nothing other than silicone being extreme pain in the neck to clean up.

Original poster, don't go 'n buy a new heatsink if you can't find a good reason for it. If your CPU is within its design temp, providing low temp isn't going to benefit you any unless you're OC'ing

    I am overclocking.

    Its now @ 53 degrees @ idle, and 55-56 @ full load.

    My friend's P4 2.8C @3.36 with the Zalman runs @ 50C under full load...

But since prescott does run hotter , I think that's normal. BTW, his fan speed is at 1500rpm...

I am trying to get the Zalman B version of this cooler, a bit lighter, but can't find one yet.

Thermaltake Silentboost K8 is good. They make them for Athlon 64/Opteron and i do believe i have seen them for Athlon XP as well (yep, confirmed)

21dba and it works well, all copper base

why cause I was using it on an Athlon and over time the paste broke down and it ended up on the cache and burned out the CPU. for my Pentiums 4's I use it all the time and highly recomend it but not for an athlon XP

Your friend has a Northwood processor.

    :wtf:

You have no idea what the hell you're talking about. Cache is on die with rest of the CPU.

Your Athlon burned out, because of misinstallation.

lowfat do you have an abit mobo? if you do the temp sensors usually read 10c to 15c hotter than it really is. just a glitch that you cant avoid but if thats no thte case then i would recomment you go with the thermalrights.
