Have a coworker who is having a problem with coyotes eating his goats. He is thinking he will need some sort of night vision and a good rifle (not a gun person). My first thought was an AR15 of course, but idk what to recommend for the NV. Will NV be overkill? I can't advise him since I have never hunted them before, much less at night.

    Thanks

A couple guys at calguns.net hunt them with AR-15s. But they did it during the day using calls to lure them.

Coyotes are easy to see at dawn and dusk. NVDs not necessary.

I hunt coyotes both during the day and at night. I don't bother with NV although a few guys I hunt with have the equipment.

An AR15 is perfect for the job. I built up a semi auto just like my duty weapon just for varmint hunting out here. What I use for night shooting is a 3lux flashlight or a rechargeable spotlight.
At night I stick to 150 yds or less simply because you need to know not only what you're shooting at, but behind the target. I can see further with the big spotlight but don't take any undo risks.

If you wanted to do it on the cheap and don't want to lay out the cash for an AR, then any decent bolt action in .223 on up will work.

Pick up a Mosin from Big 5 for less than $100 and tell him to go to town.

Just the muzzle blast will scare off animals for miles.

Would a .17 HMR be enough to take down a smaller coyote?

You can take one down with it, but you have to have a perfectly placed shot. More of a rabbit round

He needs a .223 bolt gun. NV not necessary.
