I guess the only thing I'm specifically worried about is that I've heard the raptor drives wont work w/some SATA variants ... WD lists the nvidia boards as compatible up to the 5xx but not the 680's :dunno:

I'm not too worried about the sound card because I'll only be using headphones anyway

Anyone think I'll have problems doing a mild overclock with stock cooling? :o

That will make for a great build. What psu are you planning on using?

If the rebate is still there Friday :o

edit: Might be overkill now but I want to be able to easily move to SLI once the 8800's move down considerably in price

Oh, and are you planning on doing an SLI?
The Gigabyte 965 boards are getting good results from overclocking and you wouldn't have any issues with the Raptor.

    *edit*
    Nevermind, I saw your post.

I don't know about the thermaltake.
If you're going to put together a build that's that highend, you would probably be better off with something from Fortron (FSP), PC Power&Cooling, SeaSonic, Sparkle, iStar, or Silverstone. Oh, and also Enermax.

    Something like this Fortron then

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817104026

Seems like most of the PSU's around 700W are within about 20 dollars of each other ... and the fortron actually has a better efficiency rating than the thermaltake ... To be honest I'd just never heard of the brand, so thanks :bigthumb:

how are the benchmarks on the newer raptors compared to the new seagate 7200.10 drives?

Everything I've seen indicates that the seagates in a raid0 will slightly to moderately outperform the raptors in a non-raid in most major benchmarks other than random access. If both are in raid0 configurations obviously the raptors take it ... but price for performance a lot of people like the seagates more :dunno:

There was a good thread on this subject on overclock.net but I was only able to access it through google cache.

Edit: probably be useful to look at these as well: http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=2760&p=10

Another question ... I've heard that you can't do an initial OS install from SATA drives, so I'll have to buy a separate IDE DVD drive just for that ... anyone know if that's true? :o ... If so what a PITA

That's only an issue if you don't have a service pack 2 disc.
But if you don't, then you just load the drivers off of a floppy disc during
    the install.

That makes sense ... actually I'm thinking about biting the bullet and installing Vista :noes: ... but I assume if it wasn't an issue with SP2 it wont be with Vista as well

It for sure won't be with Vista.

If you get Vista, make sure you get something above home basic.
Home basic doesn't have the aero gui.

That's probably a good option, if only for the fact that Microsoft probably
makes damned sure that the business versions work best, first.
