Could someone explain newservers and usenet to me?

    I've been using them for 3 years and I still don't get where the data actually is. I use newzbin to grab some nzbs and use a news reader to download my stuff. News servers advertise things like retention, as if they are locally hosting the data. I don't really understand how this works, is a newsgroup simply a group that releases info to all the different news servers?

    Its a house full of asians that remember "0"s and "1"s and repeat them into the microphone, producing data as the computer reads it. It's quite flawless. Cheap too!

    In all seriousness, I thought to check out usenet years ago but every time I looked into it, it seemed like there were too many hoops to jump through to get it going.

    I don't know if that's changed any by now though.
