...that 2 plates on flat bench is more of a mental step for me than physical. I've repped 205x4 before on a good day, I usually do 185, but anytime I try 225 it just falls on my chest. I'm beginning to think that I'm afraid of it or something...

    Any suggestions or ideas?

IMO it's gonna take more than 4 reps of 205

I think its a mental block too. I would do a max bench day and just do single reps up to 225.

yes, mental is a huge part of it

back i high school the 45s were spray painted orange so everyone knew if you broke 225....it took me awhile to break it cause I was scared of it....just headbut the bar, grip and rip it

it's still a mental block for me.. i can rep 225x4, but i haven't been able to get that fifth rep for 2 weeks now (so i can move up to 235 for my last set of my 5x5)

at least you can do it at least once. Ever since I first started working out I always said I knew I would be doing good once I hit 2 plates. I'm so close I can feel it, to me, all the work won't be validated until I can hit it.

    .

I hit 205x5, then the next week went
    135x5
    185x2
    205x1
    215x1
    225x1
    235xfail

Don't forget to increase your rest between sets a bit.

Just don't do it very often, psyching yourself up constantly in the gym is a good way to burn yourself out. Personally I go over the form in my head and prepare for the lift rather than get angry/whatnot.

Oh I only max out ever 4 weeks. I pratice from everytime I lift so on max sets talking shit to my self really helps me over come what ever I'm pushing.

i'll try the max thing coming up this sunday. I usually just do 135x8, then 4*185x5 then whenever im done and feeling pretty pumped i'll try for 225x1.

Yeah, its going to be a lot easier to gradually get up there with just one rep. I make sure when i'm maxing that on my reps up to my max, i try to be really explosive on the way up.

it was mostly mental for me... the first time i did it i actually closed my eyes

then, when i put it up, i opened them and my spotter said he had his hands behind his back the whole time

    i've repped 215x6 before but still haven't got 225x1

its like somebody said my ultimate goal when i first started was to bench 2 plates, and now that i'm up around that area i keep getting psyched out... also because i tried it once when i was alone in the gym (bad idea) and got pinned... that was at least a month ago and i still haven't got it :wtc:
