I'm in the market to buy a Macbook Pro, however, I was informed that by the end of this month, PC dekstops and Mac dekstops will start being sold with the new Intel Core 2 Duo processors. Can anyone tell me when Macbook Pros and other laptops are expected to start being shipped with the new Core 2 Duo processors?

Um no. Don't expect those processors in Mac Notebooks anytime soon. Just the Powermacs.

They're going to be previewing OSX 10.5 at the WWDC.

Anyway, the Core 2 Duo is the expected CPU for the PowerMac replacement. I doubt we'll see those replace the Core Duos in the notebook line any time soon.

If you are able to make do with what you have currently, the wait is worth it for some :hsugh: esp. the substainial upgrades

If you have a need for a new computer, because your old one is slow, then waiting is dumb. If you're the kind of guy who just buys new shit randomly, then sure wait forever.

Sitting on the tempation to buy my G5 when I had the money paid off nicely for me. Since I bought it through a friend who works in Apple he told me to "call next week".

Turns out they did a little remodeling in their lineup. I originally was going to get a standard 2.0ghz G5, but they went and dropped the 1.8ghz and adjusted the pricing. So now I was getting a dual 2.3ghz for the same price PLUS they added the 16x DL DVD-R drives and bumped the HD space to the 250gb all for the same price.

So I was able to get a faster machine w/more features AND save some money by not having them as "add-ons" as I originally intended. With saved cash I opted for the 23" HD ACD instead of the 20" ACD.

I would wait for Apple to finish launching their new computers for the year and then make your decision. Maybe you'll luck out like the early MacMini & Macbook owners did and get a CPU bump.

If you know a new(much better) chip is coming in the next month, and you can afford it, then you would be stupid not to wait.

They JUST changed processors. There is no architectural shift coming. If you need a Mac, buy one.

Ya, and there might be a small bump after the conference. It wasn't much in the Mini's and Macbooks but those speeds were bumped up (unannounced) after the last big conference.

It's one more month, what can it hurt?

intel started shipping meroms, I dont see why it would be stupid to wait for a 64bit chip that uses less power, especially when everyone complains about the heat produced by macbook pros. Intel said to expect companies to ship notebooks with the core 2 duo by end of august, which would put a product announcement at wwdc well placed.
