I'm putting together a micro atx build using a Core 2 Duo E6600 cpu.

I'm tired of waiting for the 965 chipset micro atx mobos to be released.
And I'm wondering what the real differences are between the 945 chipset and the 965.
So far the only thing I've noticed is the 965 allows for faster memory.

Is there anything else that makes a difference?

Hey, you other Intel guys can feel free to pipe in here too.

I just mentioned Jolly in the thread title because I figured he would pop in right away.

An asshat requested financial advice on a new truck purchase. He wanted to spend over $21k on a Ford Ranger. I (along with half the forum) promptly informed him what payment would be on a $21k truck, along with financing options, and to stop considering the Ranger. After all, he wanted a 2wd, basic model -- for which you can get the (much better) F150 for the same price. After responding that the F150 was too big I told him to look at the Tacoma or Frontier -- I prefer Frontier. He responded that he wants the Ranger, although he had never driven any other truck mentioned. I re-stated several reasons why that was a BAD idea then one of the faggot nazi mods decided that he likes the Ranger (why in the world would ANYONE pay $21k for a ranger?!?!?!??!) so I had to take a "time out" because his pussy hurt.

But I've noticed that most mods for OT are faggot nazi mods with absolutely no knowledge in their respective areas.

    straight from intel:
In addition to approximately 2.1GB/s increased memory bandwidth, pipes are increased throughout the system.

The P965 also features the ICH8 southbridge, as compared to the ICH7 in the 945P.

    ICH7 supports PCI-E spec 1.0a. ICH8 supports PCI-E spec 1.1.

ICH7 supports PCI rev 2.3 and handles six Req/Gnt pairs. ICH8 supports the same revision but handles only four Req/Gnt pairs. (a step towards phasing out PCI support)

ICH7 supports four SATA ports on the desktop, and only two on a notebook platform (any additional must be on PCI bus). ICH8 expands support to six SATA ports.

ICH7 supports up to eight USB ports via four UHCI controllers and one EHCI controller. ICH8 expands support to ten USB ports via five UHCI controllers and one EHCI controller.

ICH7 supports integrated 10/100Mbps ethernet. Additional networking (such as gigabit) must be supplied via the PCI bus. ICH8 supports integrated 10/100/1000Mbps ethernet with "System Defense".

ICH8 addes a new feature called "Intel Quiet System Technology". A technology with no mention in ICH7 documentation.

ICH7 documentation states the support of "codecs" with their Intel High Definition Audio, but they fail to state any quantity in excess of the implied "one". ICH8 documentation states support for four codecs with links at eithe 3.3V or 1.5V.

    Much appreciated Jolly.

I also noticed on the one soon to be released intel board that it comes with dolby surround as well.

I guess I'll try to hang in there for another week or so.

Does that reduce the affects of large CAS timings from DDR2?

You have read too much THG... Although DDR2 has higher CAS timings when compared to DDR it is not a bottleneck. Remember RDRAM?

Yes it does improve performance, but please do not think of this as a "band-aid" -- that is not the case.

Toms Hardware isn't the only site that ran tests that found only small improvements (~5%) in performance between DDR and DDR2, mainly due to the CAS timings.

Besides that, you never actually answered the question :)

Hmm MATX Intel Branded 965's have been release, you should see stock.

Though I will tell you I have a few of the business platform BOXDQ965GFEKR built out as test platforms with release hardware (not silver). There is a bios issue that Intel so far has been unable to address. The fan header control is faulty to be blunt the fans will cycle up and down every second or so. I have a quad support ticket in on it so hopefully will be fixed next bios release, so buyer beware....

The one I've been trying to find is the BOXDG965PZMKR. It has the 8 channel dobly surround onboard, plus 6 sata connectors, which is good because I plan on using 5 drives eventually.

Yeah, don't believe I've seen any of those flow into stock. Not a popular board judging by quantity ordered at various distributors. I'm showing ETA's of 9/1-9/29 between Ingram and Synnex, ASI shows as Backordered. Tech Data shows 9/10-9/24.

As a heads up it isn't MATX, you may want to check that part again, nor does it have 6 sata, it is however 8 channel audio :wiggle:

I'm not really sure. This is the Intel number I went looking for, and it linked to the other number I posted. But this is the actual board I want.
    DG965OT

Let me know if you have the box** number for that.

Ah. I see the 965OT part in there. Something tells me that's what I was looking for. You probably saved me a big headache from getting the wrong board.

    Much thanks!
