ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis city leader frustrated with the police response to rising crime called Tuesday on residents to arm themselves to protect their lives and property.

Alderman Charles Quincy Troupe said police are ineffective, outnumbered or don't care about the increase in crime in his north St. Louis ward. St. Louis has had 157 homicides in 2008, 33 more than last year at this time.

"The community has to be ready to defend itself, because it's clear the economy is going to get worse, and criminals are getting more bold," Troupe, 72, said Tuesday.

Troupe said that when he and residents approached a district police commander last year, they were told "there was nothing he could do to protect us and the community ... that he didn't have the manpower."

Police did not immediately return requests for comment. Chief Dan Isom told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he understands Troupe's frustration but doesn't support citizens arming themselves.

Carrying guns, he said, is not a "recipe for a less violent community."

    Troupe for mayor!

    I support this post.
If someone threatens you, skin your smoke-wagon and light him up.

If we could just get rid of guns there would be no crime. :(

wtf is with cops not thinking that armed citizens are a good thing?

no wonder the #1 reason why people become cops is to feel powerful.

I believe this 100%. One the depression comes I plan to be prepared.

  7. I think you'll find most cops who are actually out on the streets support armed citizens. It's the department management, who are usually more politicians than they are cops, who don't support guns.

you would think it would be the opposite because apparently, armed citizens make their job harder :ugh:

  11. A number of court cases have been related to issues of the responsibility of police to aid people in need. As far as I know, they've all ruled that the police have no responsibility to help. Read about Castle Rock v. Gonzales and Warren v. District of Columbia. There are many more, but these are two well known cases.

The case of two chicks in DC who got raped repeated for hours while cops waited outside takes the cake in my book.

edit: Oops that is Warren v. District of Columbia.

My great-aunt's son is a police officer in Huntsville AL, it is a quiet town as far as crime is concerned. When we were discussing crime and concealed carry he told me that he wished more peopled carried because he truly believes that it saves lives. He even went as far as to say it's way more effective than the small police force they have there could ever be.

When seconds count, 911 is only minutes away

There are lots of cops out there that want to be the only ones with guns, and there are lots of sheeple that agree with them. The problem is, these idiots don't realize there is no possible way to confiscate all the guns from the bad guys.

However please don't think that just because you have a gun or even some sort of carry permit that it makes you any kind of LEO. We had a very unfortunate event here in Jacksonville a year or two ago - A truly a good guy who was active in his community, lived in a neighborhood that was going down hill. He called police 50-60 times over the course of several months about drug dealers selling from the sidewalk right in front of his house. Other than the occasional drive by the police appeared to do nothing. Fed up the homeowner got his gun and went out to run of the drug dealers that were standing right beside his driveway. Unfortunately he was confronting two undercover/vice cops who went for their guns upon seeing his. A shoot out occurred because the homeowner had no idea they were cops and the cops had no idea he was a "good guy" - - the homeowner was killed.

that's what happens when you have fuckhead cops that don't do shit about troubled areas. it's not the homeowner's fault he got shot. I would be as frustrated, too. Why didn't the cops identify themselves. And why the FUCK would two undercover cops be doing a drug deal with THEMSELVES?

    this story reeks of bullshit.

That's a misnomer. I am close friends with a local Sgt, Lt. and a Sherrif. All have given me verbal support in my predicament. Unfortunately you are correct in that LOTS of officers do not have that belief. But my belief in that aspect is that many of them shouldn't even be officers.

Sounds to me like the homeowner was brandishing a gun.

Slanging in and of itself is no reason to pull out a gun. Most street level dealers don't carry weapons "at work". Sentencing enhancements make it more cost effective to risk being robbed.

    * if this actually happened

Bloody Sunday, one thing they teach you in CHP class in VA is to not get involved in any matter with your firearm unless your life or your loved ones' life is in danger.

You will find out why, they will give you some case studies.

Never said I would do exactly as he did, I just wanted to point out how fishy the story smelled.

Yep, IIRC Supreme Court has ruled that it is not the responsibility of Police to protect citizens, but to investigate after crimes have been committed.
