Ive been eating beef jerky and sun flower seeds non-stop this week. What are the negative or positive effects of this huge sodium consumption? (im guessing there are no benefits) But what are the consequences if I kept this up? I've been drinking a crapload of water so I don't think I am dehydrated. What other health risks are there?

    :noes:

bloat? wow. Sunflower seeds don't have too much fat. 3g saturated fat. 20g polyunsaturated fat. 10g mono unsaturated fat. per huge bag. It would take like 3 days to eat a full bag.

Can we get confirmation that a lot of salt would lead to bloat.

yes, excess sodium increases subcutaneous water retention, just drink more water.

i guess that makes sense. H2O follows NA+ in the cellular level. So I am holding extra water weight because of my recent and extreme salt consumption?

if you are eating a lot of foods preserved in sodium, you can switch your table salt to a salt replacement which is potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride. people with high blood pressure have to do this, but it might help balance the electrolytes in your system and cut down on the bloat.
if you don't use table salt, you could possibly look into making your own beef jerky, or getting unsalted sunflower seeds (possibly available at health/natural food stores)

I think sodium makes you hold extra water because your kidneys work by using a salt concentration gradient to get water out of your body. So if your blood is really salty the water doesn't move out of your blood into your urine as easy.

    I could be wrong :ugh:

I think salt is used in active transport, not a diffusion gradient. So I think i'm sucking h2o out of my urine back in to my blood/tissues.

Salt is moved through the cell membrane through proton pumps I believe but I'm not sure if that's the mechanism that the kidneys use. Ask me after I hit the kidneys in A&P I'll tell you all about it :noes:

haha I did that in A&P about 4 months ago but I forgot it all. I believe its an ion so it can move between the nephron wall freely. Ill love, but I do feel like im carrying a little more weight.

Cutting sodium and quitting drinking lowered my blood pressure immediately by like 15 points. :noes:

Be careful or you will die :noes:
