I don't know how many of you are aware of the most recent 200 and some lawsuits filed by the RIAA, but one of those being sued was a 12-year-old honor student living in low-income housing in a single parent household. Her family settled with the RIAA for a $2,000 fine. This received a lot of publicity because of her circumstances, and a hardware site I'm some of you read (sister site of hardocp.com) raffled off a high-end water-cooled system (3GHz System with a Radeon 9700Pro, 512 PC3500) with parts donated by the proprietor. 400+ raffle tickets at $5 each were sold out in 5 hours. They're trying to contact the family now to arrange for the check to be mailed. :bigthumb:

yeah its a great idea, but what about the 4th or 5th 12 year old kid that happens to and gets no support?

i know they are low income, and i feel horrible for what the RIAA did to them.

I just hope the community (us and other geeks) will help out and start maybe a giant trust fund? (i know im poor, but im helping with what i can do via donations when i got spare $$$)

I sincerely hope that we don't see that scenario. Either the record companies will adapt to the changing technologies and understand that the fault is equally theirs, or the public will see that file sharing is neither anonymous or innocent - and then it's over. Either way, I can't see how the music industry will maintain its organization or the income levels that it's seen in the past decade.

at the rate they are going, a lot of ppl will only buy non-riaa music and boycotte everything riaa. they are playing russian roulette with their customers, and eventually the riaa will lose, its just a matter of time.

a comment on /. "wait till the riaa sue's a deaf person." i know it will happen, its just a matter of time!

Holy shit! Nice!! I fuckin hate the RIAA more everytime someone settles with them. They're just regular people getting sued by a big corporation. THey can't afford to fight back. THey have to settle.
I feel bad for them. I go they get the donations.
