It that time again for me to start a new hobby. I'm bored with life, and I need something new to do. On my way to Tahoe, I noticed a few people pulled over the side of the road to take pictures of this desert of snow... So I figured, it'd be cool to restart.

A friend of mine is trying to convince me to buy a 20 or 30D with a descent lens(most of my shops are fairly up close ~0-30' away. But I want some new  stuff :hs:(I like the big LCD in the back of the 40D).

I'd like to budget myself at ~$1800. Halp :x:

just get it, no convincing needed.

unless you want a full frame for shits and giggles.

    or the nikon d300

or a medium format for an uber hobby!

actually, honestly. I wouldn't recommend a new 30d/40d to a beginner just because it'll depreciate so much in the span of 1-2 years. the lenses you get probably won't lose any value at all, but the body could be $300-500. either buy a nice body used, or buy an xti.

if you decide you don't want to keep doing it as a hobby.. with a new 30d/40d you take a big loss. with a used body or great budget cam (xti) you won't

i got the 20d as my first dslr a while back and haven't regretted it at all :dunno:

if i was starting out as a noob again, i'd probably start at 40d, as opposed to the full frame versions :o

or if nikon, d300 for sure

I'm not a complete noob when it comes to photography. I do have an idea of what I'm getting myself into, which is why I'm considering the 40D. This is one hobby that is going to last a lifetime. I've always been fascinated about photography, but never really allowed myself to buy anything that expensive in this culture. Four years ago, before my brother's Minolta Dimage 7Hi broke, I'd always go out and take pics before it stopped working. Since then I've been considering on purchasing a nice DSLR, but haven't put enough thought to it to pull the trigger. So that pretty much sums up my story about wanting something sweet such as the 40D(I can also use it as a tax write off).

That's just wayyyy more than what I need :o

But so far... now it seems like a tossup between 20 and the 40D :hs:.

40D, for sure. Might as well get the 17-85 IS kit lens with it too. it's a great package!

    I haven't spent that much.

$1300 for canon 30D. $300 for tamron 28-75/2.8. $300 for canon 50/1.4. $50 in filters. $100 in CF cards. $130 for crumpler 7 million dollar home. $350 for canon 580ex ii.

    :hs:

at least the 30D is the only thing that's really lost any value.

Not too bad at all. That's probably just around the range I'd like to be in, or possibly a little less :bigthumb:. I just rebuilt/restored this 82 Honda CB750F(motorcycle), and it's going to fund this up coming camera when it's sold :mamoru:. Or maybe... I'll worry about selling it later :hs:.

honestly, there's nothing wrong buying used. i sorta wished i got a used 20d and some good glass rather than a new rebel xt with kit lens two years ago.

but if you've got the money go ahead. i have the 40d now and i love it.

THAT kit lens is pretty nice. It's not the "kit lens" status of the XT/XTi at all.

but, depending on your budget, can be replaced by quite a few much nicer lenses.

I have 95blue240sx's lens in mind, in place of the kit lens. Unless you suggest picking his over the kit lens or both, then I'll see what I can manage.

i've never used the lens he mentioned, and i don't know what you could get the lens i listed for on the 'net.

i have mine on 'unofficial" sale for $350 (i think?) (the 27-85 IS), but i'm not really REALLY interested in selling it because it's such a fun lens.

i love the 17-85, but you need to read some reviews & figure out what you want, i think.

    40D is all good, though

If you have yourself set on a 40D, get one, but you're not really going to have a lot for lenses. Normally you'd budget your body as 50% or less of your total initial budget.

If you insist on the 40D I recommend the following:
    Canon 40D Body Only $1,149
    Tamron 17-50mm $430
    Tiffen UV Filter $15
    Lens Pen $10
Lowepro Slingshot or Nova 4/5 AW $65
    Compact Flash Cards $50

If you go with a used 20D you can have quite a nice setup including a basic strobist kit, as follows:
    Used Canon 20D: $500
    Tamron 17-50mm $430
    Tiffen UV Filter $15
    Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L $550
    Vivitar 285HV $90
    Ebay Remote $30
    Light stand $20
    Umbrella Bracket $15
    Umbrella $20
    Lens Pen $10
Lowepro Slingshot or Nova 4/5 AW $65
    Compact Flash Cards $50
