The wifey and I saw a 03 TT convertible triple black with 45K miles on it. Personal mechanic checked it out, near perfect condition. Chipped and aftermarket DV.

We own 2 paid off SUV's. One needs some work to get smogged in CA(the exploder). We save a car payment every month, and the financing on this TT would be within $20 of that current savings payment.

The cost of the car is 12% of our income.

Tell me the reasons why this is a terrible car to own given our situation. Or tell me of similar sports cars that are convertible and a better car to own long term. Otherwise, I am buying the car.

    1. If it's been modified, it's been abused. Might have been well-maintained, but abused nonetheless.

    2. It's designed to make you spend money on maintenance. LOTS of money.

If you want a fun little roadster, test-drive a new Miata before you make any decisions. (It's even RWD, which the base-model TT isn't.) The bang:buck ratio can't be beat.

Just do it and fuck the haters

Is it a ttq or just a tt? If it's a q they are a great little all weather car. I have a similar year S3 which shares the platform and it's great to drive in all weather.

Nobody's hating. The TT is an Audi, which means it's built by Volkswagen Auto Group, which means it's built to cost lots of money. He's better off buying a car that doesn't demand regular maintenance on pain of self-destruction.

I'm probably not getting to you in time but i'll try anyway. From personal ownership experiences I can say that...
    1. the turbo dies at about 65k miles which is 4 grand give or take a couple hundred.
    2. the timing belt will snap at about 75k if you get it in time expect to spend between 800 and 1200 dollars
    3. your clutch should you choose to do any spirited driving will die costing you about 2500 to replace
All that for a car that even with a chip will likely at best run low 14's and understeers like a boat and to run much better expect to spend 8 to in my case 24 thousand dollars. granted I run tens but if I had it to do over again, no way no how no Audi TT but if you love a money pit it's the way to go.

Another post from a moronic Audi owner who cant do any work himself.

If you are self sufficient and can do a decent amount of work yourself, owning a VW/Audi is not a problem, especially if you're into tuning.

A clutch/flywheel kit for a 1.8Turbo costs around $250. I personally replaced my clutch/tranny in 2 hours flat on a garage floor with no lifts, just jack stands.

Turbo won't die so fast. It's luck of the draw, my 1.8T has 120k on it's original turbo and was still putting out 15lbs of efficient boost. And 4 grand??? You are the stupidest SOB to walk into an Audi Service dealership, you're what they love. A Ko4 turbo (which is in the audi), is rougly $1200 BRAND NEW... Which means you can get a slightly used one for ~$300-$500

Timing belt is a maintenence thing that ALL cars are going to need at one point in time. You can buy your own Timing Belt kit (which I'd advise to replace the water pump while doing so) for around $399. This is probably the most pricey repair in OWNING a 1.8turbo motor, especially if you can't do the work yourself. You can definitely expect a $700-$1000 labor bill, or go on fourtitude or vortex and find someone local for cheap, its VERY common in the VAG world.

    -------------

What it comes down to is what you want the car for?

If its an audi TT 225, then DO IT! Awesome cars, great handling and great power.

If you're looking for a 'sporty' daily that can do work, the standard 1.8Tq is a great ALL weather car.

Either way you're going to enjoy it if thats what you're looking for in a car.

    This is all true

Fuck I'm sick of whingers. Boo hoo, my timing belt broke. Yeah, no fucking fooling. That's why they, like most manufacturers, say to change it at certain intervals.

Base Model may as well be a convertable VW bug with no back seat.

Give numbers and people can make better recommendations.

I agree with S2000 and MX-5 thus far. Both good little fun cars. Since you are going the chick car roadster route, the MR2 is another one to throw out there.

Or go big-little and get an elise. lol

So if it has a drop-top, it doesn't look like it was styled by Picasso, and it has amenities to speak of, it's a chick car? Is that the new rule?

I'm a hardcore euro/vw fan but I would have to say as a general car enthusiast that a Miata (MX-5) would be a cash buy that would save you a ton of money in every way possible, plus they are A BLAST to drive!
