What programs do I need to do this conversion? Difficult? I'm semi computer literate, but no "1337 haxx0r" or whatever. Thanks in advance.

There you go assuming again. Not every DVD is encrypted.

the majority are... And the current programs that would convert them are not legal because their code does crack encryption.

besides, I'll bet the dvd he has in mind is encrypted. :mamoru:

Actually, there are a few programs that will convert them only if they are unencrypted.

you'll kill quality if that story is true... you don't have the original tapes? (i hope you're using DV)

These are home movies on VHS, ripped to DVD by one of those machines. Then I loaded the DVD onto my computer. The quality is alright, as good as can be expected. But I still can't edit...

You should probably convert them into MPEGs instead of MOVs (to save the quality, as jolly mentioned). There are a number of tools that will do this, I don't know of any specific ones for Windows.

Hmmm, well does anyone know of programs for Windows then? So far I only could find one demo program and it only let me convert 5 minutes of video :ugh:

You basically want a program that will "rip" your DVD to MPEG2. Once you go past MPEG2 to AVI or MOV formats you'll start losing quality. You'll probably have to reauthor your DVD with the edited MPEG2's.

Maybe this guide will get you going: http://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=224833
