i run server 2003 r2 on a box in my closet. i'm upgrading all the hardware and most of the drives. my needs for 2003 aren't there anymore, i could get by with xp pro, sharing out the drives.

i remember in the past that if i took a drive out of my server and put it in my xp machine, that it would give me some type of protected drive message under disk management. it wouldn't mount the drive or let me do anything to it.

is there a program that will let me unlock the drive? or should i send all 400 gb of data over the network to another drive so that i can use it in my winxp machine?

shouldn't have a prob is you're admin in xp, you can take ownership and re-assign permissions.

i'll have to take a screenshot of it once i finish transferring all the data over the network. i'll throw one of my server 2003 drives in my xp machine. logged in as administrator didn't seem to make a difference :dunno:

    this is my problem:

can't initialize the disk, can't assign a drive letter. can't even format

looks like vista will read it. fuck it, i'll just hook up an external to my server and grab everything i need. sending it over the network, even though its gigabit is taking forever

There should be an option when right clicking on that drive to "Convert to MBR".
