ok this has been happening at random times when i'm on the computer without warning, I can hear my harddrive shut down and my computer will restart by itself. Is this a hardware or software problem?

I would start with a new IDE cable.

I would also check your power management setup in the control panel to see what it is set at. For a test, I'd set it to never turn the hard drive off and see how that works out.

    HTH.

I thought I was the only one that said "HTH". :)

Def check power management, though if you are actually USING the computer when it happens, it probably isn't the problem.

I have seen issues where the hard drive was jumpered for Cable Select, rather than Master, would cause irregular errors like that. Check the jumpers and set them as needed (master, no slave... master w/ slave... whatever).

it could just be an overheating problem, but i doubt it
maybe the MB starts by shutting the hd off
id follow these other suggestions first though
