Okay, it's not a big deal or anything, but I usually leave my brand new Inspiron on and signed into AIM all the time.

Occasionally, my screen name will come back from idle when I'm not there (I was viewing someone else's buddy list). This also happens when I'm at home, as I have my monitor set to shut off after a few minutes of idle time, but I find it will sporadically turn on and fully illuminate my room just to scare the living piss out of me in the middle of the night. Any programs that might cause this? I have nothing out of the ordinary installed.

The priest wasn't very helpful as he had never heard of an "Inspiron." Anyone else?

It's a laptop, and I do have it set so that the LCD display turns off after 5 minutes of idle time. But like I stated in the original post, it will randomly come back on. I use AVG Anti-Virus, and I've disabled auto scans.

I think any software you have set to auto update would also cause this.

can you shut it off? my macbook will allow me to turn off the backlight. my old laptop would allow me to turn off the screen by tricking it into thinking that i had an external monitor connected

It doesn't take much for an optical mouse to detect a move - or a touchpad. Been my experience it's been one of these two that is the culprit.
