I just assembled a new computer, with a P4 3.0C, Intel D865GBF motherboard, stock Intel heatsink/fan and Antec Sonata case (1x120mm exhaust fan). The idle temp seems to be approx 35-40C, but when I open up Unreal Tournament, the graphics start chopping up, and the temp readout indicates 50C (this is after a couple minutes of gameplay, I think the motherboard is throttling back the cpu clock speed, which is causing the slowdown). A friend of mine recently put together a 2.4C which ran hot at first, but he said it seems to have "settled in" and dropped to the 30C range. Is this typical for these P4 CPU's? My case has a mount for a 120mm intake fan, but i would like to avoid installing one if at all possible, to reduce noise. I will if I have to. I've noticed many computers these days get by with just an exhaust fan, so hopefully I'll be fine. If my heatsink/thermal transfer shit does need to "settle in", how long does that usually take? Thanks in advance for any advice.

50C is nothing to be worried about
the thermal paste settling in takes about 3-5 days

Make sure the cpu heatsink is properly seated. The 3+GHz P4's get really, really fucking hot.

    but somethings wrong
    have you overclocked
P4s dont get to hot normally with a good fan

Sweet. Guess I have no choice but to wait it out. 50 does seem kinda hot to me, and the fact that the game slows down, indicates to me that the CPU is being throttled back, because of the heat. I took care to make sure the heatsink was installed firmly and correctly (lined it up, slowly pulled both levers down simultaneously - seemed to be on tightly). This is my first Intel based PC that I've built - all the rest have been AMD. I've always heard that the P4's run cool compared to the AMD's. I was suprised to see it run that hot though - I figured even under full load, it shouldn't go much higher than 40C or so.

Are you using Arctic Silver thermal compound?

Maybe you have a shitty graphics card?

    Did you lap the heatsink?

You know, the BIOS SHOULD have an option to turn off CPU throttling...

Seems liek you don't know shit about what you're doing.

Install the optional 120mm fan and get rid of the stock heatsink... I'd say get rid of the intel motherboard too :ugh: .. Get yourself an Asus P4P800 deluxe mobo and purchas a Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu

I got the CPU, Mobo, and WinXP Pro for $199 through an Intel retail purchase offer, so didn't have much choice in the motherboard. I would assume that the provided heatsink/fan combo should be sufficient to cool the chip

The high end P4's do actually get extremely hot. They run even hotter than AMD's high end chips.

    STFU noob

Disabling the CPU throttling feature sounds like a really bright idea.... Dumbass. Yeah, lets disable any thermal protection and let it burn up. Moron

Obviously you're the dumbass if you can't get it to be properly cooled.

Turn off the throttling, who knows, maybe your processor WONT get any hotter, ever think about that? Noob?

Thanks for the INTELLIGENT replies everyone, I think I'll try to wait it out before getting too worried, then look into a better heatsink/fan combo and/or addition case fan

    Get Arctic Silver.
    Lap the heatsink.

    TURN OFF THERMAL THROTTLING.

    I've built PLENTY of computers.

Don't come and ask for help, then be an asshole and act like you know everything.

I have assembled computers since I was 12, I think I know what I'm doing. This is my first Intel based system, so I don't know exactly what to expect. I have no problem taking advice from others, providing that they are not cocky know-it-all-but-really-don't noobs. kthxbye

If you've been doing it since you were 12, how come you don't know to get an aftermarket cooler and Arctic Silver? Clearly, you know shit, so as Matt-AWD said, stfu.

50c isn't anything to worry about when playing a game....if it were 60 then I would be worried or if it were 50c at idle.

Listen... THIS IS THE FIRST P4 SYSTEM I'VE ASSEMBLED. I've always used aftermarket heatsink/fan combos. This is the first MFR provided HSF I've used. I can always change that out later. Maybe if you wouldn't come off as such an ass, others would treat you like one
