I have xp home and after my comp. has been on for a while, I'll try to open a game, the volume control, or IE, etc. and the little hourglass will pop up next to my cursor but it goes away and the program doesn't load. I can however open some stuff through my start menu like my comp. and control panel. Then after a while, everything opens up at once.

hmmm, sounds like you might have a hung process in the background. Might even be explorer....

open up task manager and see if any processes are hung, and if not, kill explorer.exe and then (still in task manager) go to File -> New Task and put in "explorer" and it will restart itself. If you don't start it manually, then it will ususally do itself after about 30 seconds or so. Good luck

:o I've had that problem before - I think it was NAV or download accellerator that was hanging up, uninstalled and reinstalled the offending programs and that fixed the problem
