When I leave a disc in the drive and restart, the dvd drive isnt recognized by the bios or windows. If I take it out, it's recognized. Any ideas what the problem is? Also sometimes when I restart, the primary boot harddrive will switch. So instead of booting from the XP hd, it tries to boot from my files drive. I switch it back in the bios, and seemingly at random, it'll switch back. Could this be related, or is my motherboard just dying?

How old is your computer? It could be the motherboard battery dying out.
That would make your cmos flake out, which could cause the mobo settings to change.

Its about two years old now. Would that also cause the dvd problem?

A cmos that keeps getting reset could probably do that.

The battery shouldn't be dead in just two years though.

You could replace it to eliminate the chance.

Worst thing that could happen is you waste a couple of bucks.

I guess I'll try that and see what happens.
