So I just built myself a new PC... and it keeps freezing for some reason, I managed to install Windows XP Pro SP2 and some other random crap like vid card drivers, audio card drivers, mobo drivers (duh), and Processor driver (first proc I've had to do that to....) Its an odd issue because it freezes randomly. :eek3: I'll load up windows and about 15 sec after being done loading it'll lock up, but I can move my mouse fine (cant click anything though) Sometimes it wont freeze until 15-30 minutes into using it, infact I'm on it right now haha. I played Battlefield 2 for about 3 hours yesterday and didn't have ONE SINGLE issue with it until I quit and went to browse the web. :wtc:
I tried booting it up 1 mem stick at a time in DIMM 1 and 3 (Primaries, as I understand) and still didn't help :\ I also tried moving my SATA connecter to SATA plug #3 on my mobo to see if that is gonna do anything (I'm lost?)

    Specs
    -Abit Fatal1ty AN9 32X mobo
-AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core processor (4200+)
    -2x1GB sticks of G.Skill DDR2 800 RAM (Timing is correct 5-5-5-15)
    -Maxtor 500GB HDD (SATA3)
    -EVGA GeForce 7600GT
    -Logisys 575W Power-Supply

Nothing is overclocked, and my CPU temps are showing about 93deg F Constant

    HELLLLLPPPPP. Please?
    thx

Try this, then post back what you find:

Right click on my computer > left click on manage >
on the left side, double click event viewer >
Right click application > clear all events >
Right click system > clear all events > close out computer management.

Wait a while, or until the next freeze then go back into event viewer >
Double click both application and system and look for yellows and reds.

also, try booting into safe mode w/ networking and see if you can navigate the web and at least keep the system up for a longer period of time than 30 sec (or 30 min, whatever its uptime is now)...

if it stays up, go start->run-> MSCONFIG -> startup tab -> click "disable all" button -> apply -> close -> restart system.... let it load into XP normally and see if you run into the issue.

edit: do Mr. Brown's steps first, because we'll want that event viewer cleared regardless.

Thanks guys! I just did the thing Doc said... we'll see what happens with it :) I'll be sure to post up the yellows/reds

I've gone into msconfig before and disabled everything that isn't needed (prettymuch everything listed haha)

    .

edit: ya really one way to save you might be by installing Ubuntu, unless it's your hardware faulting.

Do some research on "DCOM Error 10016", and may the force be with you.

If you choose to try linux, never forget that Kubuntu > Ubuntu.

I think it's one of the updates that might cause that.

Try this to see if it helps:

    Start > run > type services.msc and ok >
Scroll down the list to computer browser and double click on it >
In the drop down arrow for "startup type", select disable and ok.

Next, scroll down to dcom server process launcher, and do the same thing
only select manual instead of disable. Ok, and exit.

See if that fixes the problem. If not, try going into the dcom server process launcher and selecting disable.

What's the logic behind this? What do those services do?

I don't believe DCOM has anything to do with locking up. Something is either taxing your CPU or your HDD has issues. Just an educated guess or something to consider.

Computer browser doesn't do anything unless you're on a network.

Dcom is new to service pack2 and is related to remote procedure call, but Micro-sly tied it into a few other procedures as well. That's why I suggested turning it on manual at first.

Anyway, I found a link online to a guy who had the same problem and fixed it by disabling those two services. And I found a few references to people who said the trouble started after a windows update.

And if you do decide linux, always remember that Gentoo > Kubuntu > Ubuntu
