It would help if you're tell us what the BSOD said.
Also try starting up in SafeMode

Hit F8 on startup and disable automatic reboot on system failure. Post up the error codes and text next time it happens.

Can you boot into safe mode? Could be a rootkit(spyware) or a bad hard drive...

Do hard drive tests.. you wont find software that will just remove the rootkit.. or find it for that matter.

Sounds like a PSU issue to me.

EDIT: Not necessarily the BSOD issue but the inability to reboot for 10min

I misread the whole damn topic. Sounds like your motherboard is holding power.. could be a psu or mobo?

start at the power supply? how much can i get a decent psu for? the comp has an AMD athlon cpu, 512mb ram, 60gb hdd, so im guessing nothing that powerful, right?

You can always rent one from Best Buy or some place. Just buy a cheap one, test to see if thats the issue, then return it and tell them you have an old Dell and the PSU didn't work (your motherboard power connection is different and you need to get it from Dell themselves). If it was the PSU then order one from newegg or some place, I highly recommend Corsair, especially the -HX models.

And don't feel bad about the BSOD, it happened during the opening ceremony at the Olympics:

PSU can definitely cause a BSOD. Sounds like the Power supply is failing and dropping current to the drive. try a new power supply if possible.

BB should return your money in whatever form you payed them in, I'm pretty sure. Just go there and double check before you buy, but shouldn't be store credit.
