ill type this in poem form so its easy to understand what i fucked up.

    reformating problems:

i had a virus, i tried to get rid of it but no luck.

i reinstalled windows xp (thinking, it would delete evertyhing and install xp on a fresh HD)

when it finished installing, the virus was gone, but for some reason all of my documents, files, folders are still here taking up space.

i tried format c: but there is a problem and it wont format.

how can i get it to format?

    ============================

other things you might want to know:

    its a dell
    it has no floppy drive
it has a single hard drive which i partitioned to make 2 hard drives

when you install windows xp, do it from dos

meaning have the xp cd in when you boot and watch the screen...it will say to boot from cd press any key and then have a few dots after it (adding a dot every second or so)...this will only stay on the screen for a few seconds so watch your screen

then when you get into the install, it will ask what partition to install it to...delete the partitions by pressing D and then create new ones by pressing C (it has instructions on the screen)...then on the next screen it will ask if you want to format...

    then install

    think about it.

formating = deleting EVERY file on your hard drive. and windows is installed on that very same hard drive. so how could windows possibly run if you format while in windows? :dunno:

i saw that screen, but instead of deleating the 1 partition that already had windows, i just choose to install it on the same partition.

if i have a c: partition and a d: partition. of equal size (15gb each). when i deleat C: and then create a C: will the partition default to 15gb?

nevermind, im not seeing that screen at all. as soon as i put the cd in, it asks "what do you want to do" and it has a few choices but none of them say "boot from cd"

BTW, this is in windows. am i supposed to do it in dos? how do i get to dos on a dell?

during start up, it says press f2 to enter setup or f12 to enter boot setup. in boot set up. how do i get into dos w/o going into windows?

you cannot do it within windows...look at my post above, put the cd in and reboot your computer...BEFORE the screen that says windows xp that has the little blue line going to the right and it keeps cylcling when the computer is booting you should see something that says press any key to boot from cd.....

or something like that...if not, reboot again, enter your boot options, and make sure that boot device 1 is the cd drive

if none of that works, hold down f5 while your computer is booting up...like start holding f5 right when you press the power button on the computer (if it was off) and that will give you a screen with boot options...i know it'll give you safe mode etc. and i'm not quite sure if it'll give you a command prompt (a.k.a. dos)

1.) Boot from the CD (put the CDROM before the hard drive in the boot order in the BIOS)
2.) It will search for a previos version of Windows and find it and ask if you are sure to install or some shit. Yes, install a new copy.
3.) Now it will bring up a screen showing both partitions, delete both of them. It will ask if you are sure, it's gonna delete everything, say yes.
4.) When both partitions are deleted, it will show it as one big unpartitioned space. Create a partition and just hit enter at the screen that asks how big you want it. Default is the whole drive.
5.) Format it as NTFS assuming 2000 or XP
    6.) Install Windows.
