$500 is not really cheap. I saw one on AnandTech the other day for $350.

I still miss the reason on why people would rather spend $500 to make a slower chip faster when they can just buy a faster chip in the first place...

becuase this techknowledgy doesn't get outdated... The compressors have already been engineered to their maximum potential, you can only get bigger ones to be better and then those cost more to operate. This techknowledgy won't be trump'd by somthing else down the line. You can put it on new proccessors or proccessors that have been out for years. /phase change bandwagin

you can buy refurbished ones for cheaper than that. Vapo's aren't that good anyways, i'd much rather put one together myself.

Because it's more satisfying to make something work for you than to go out and buy something else that already does the job. That's why people still do stuff like carpentry and gardening when there are a million grocery stores and furniture shops waiting to take their money.

That said, a mini fridge costs a lot less than $500 and it cools off your computer just as well.

 I still miss the people mod vehicles. Why not spend the thousands on a faster/better vehicle in the first place.

A mini-fridge won't cool your computer, the compressor isn't near powerful enough. It will die in no time.
