Just bought my Dad a new dual core Intel from a Dell sale last week. Came with Ubuntu, just finished reformating and installing XP Pro. What basic/neccessary software do I need to make it as idiot proof as possible (his gf and my sister will be using it from time to time)?

    So far I've got:
    Firefox
    AdAware
    SpyBot w/Teatimer
    AVG Free

I'll be installing Office and Photoshop after I'm sure everythings set :hsd:

Gaim is shit, imo. I hate the goofy GTK look it brings. Pidgin looks 100x better.

Zone Alarm. The XP firewall only blocks incoming traffic.

You want something that blocks outgoing traffic, even if you use a router imo.

That way if something gets past your defenses, you'll at least get an alert when it tries to call home.

I'm going to have to check out the vlc one of these days. I see a lot of you guys using that. So far I'm happy with media player classic, but I might as well see for myself.

I've found that vlc handles divx videos a little better than media player classic, and doesn't have the low volume levels that wmp 10 and 11 suffer with from time to time.

Sounds expensive. You must have a wealthy client base to shell out for MS Office and Symantec Corporate.

Get the fuck rid of Teatimer. Spybot is fine (I guess), but Teatimer will destroy your computer's performance and pop up all KINDS of annoying "Are you sure?" questions about things you don't know the correct answers to.

Trillian and GAIM are both garbage. If you had the option to use Kopete, I'd say to use that, but since Kopete is a KDE product, just use AOL Instant Messenger and shut off all its extra "features". At least that way you know the product will always be compatible with the network.

You don't need MS Office; OpenOffice is just as good as Office 2003, though if you're getting Office 2007, nothing beats that for usability -- yet, anyway.

Skip WinZip and 7-Zip and WinRAR and just get ZipGenius. It reads all formats and it's freeware. It even makes it easy to make self-extracting ZIP files.

Daemon Tools is nice, but Microsoft Virtual CD does just as good of a job at mounting ISO images as virtual CD drives, and that's all you really need a program like that for. You don't have to steal it, either.

Add Mozilla Thunderbird 2.004 to the list; if you need Microsoft Exchange connectivity, it can already handle that -- you just need to get some specific info from the Exchange server owner. For normal email accounts, Thunderbird beats Outlook hands-down for spam-filtering and general convenience.

x2 on Winamp, especially if you're willing to pay the twenty bucks for the Pro version. It's got features that match iTunes (minus actually buying music) and it blows Windows Media Player out of the water. It is, however, more difficult to configure exactly the way you want it, but the other media players don't even give you half the options Winamp has, so it's really like saying the problem is not knowing what to do with your newfound freedom.

Forget the Symantic,Norton,Etc fearmongering Bullshit, Install the NOD32 AV System instead

Since utorrent was already posted multiple times, I'm sure you know where you can get it.
