In my opinion, communication is #1 in making a relantionship work.

My boyfriend of 5 years.... has no communication skills what so ever. We can't talk about any issues that either or us have without getting in a retarded arguement. Now I will take some blame .... he definitely bares the bront of my anger but.... most of it comes from me not being able to talk to him. Depending on the situation, we could be argueing about something totally retarded... I'll hear him out... let him insult me etc... even if I disagree with him, I have the ability to be the bigger person and hear his side... when it comes my turn... NO! He doesn't have the ability to do the same, therefore instead of the problem being dealt with.... I push my hurt/anger inside and when the situation happens again I lose it....

What can 1 person do to make a relantionship work better? I know it sounds dumb, but if the other person won't help and your the one that seems to be bearing the bront of all the bullshit / pain / hurt... what can you do?

No matter how much you love someone, love is not enough to hold a relationship together. I was with my ex for 4 years and I had the same problem. I could listen to his side of the story or how he feels etc but when it came time to hear me out, he had a problem listening. I agree with you that communication plays a HUGE part in a relationship and if it's not there then you are gonna continue to fight over stupid things. After 4 years with my ex, I can tell you now that I love him and still think he is the most amazing guy in the world. But...we could not communicate and eventually I got tierd of the fighting over stupid things and I left. I don't think it's possible to change someone. So if it's communication that you seek, your obviously not going to find it with the person you are with now.

    The communication ladder:

    0. Refuses to communicate at all
    1. Will tell their side, but refuses to hear the other person out.
    2. Willing to talk and listen, but still disregards what the other person says
    3. Talks and listens, willing to reach a compromise
