So, I'm looking at maybe building a new computer, since my PIII 500 MHz is getting a little dated. So, I'll show you what I priced out and you give me suggestions on what to change, since lots of you know more than I do. This is just the base system. I might add a monitor/keyboard/mouse, or I might keep the ones I have and buy a switching unit so I can use either computer with the same accessories (make the old one my Windows computer)

Case & PSU: Antec Sonata Mid Tower Case (black) w/ 380W PSU ($149)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-7VAXA VIA KT400A, LAN, audio ($109)
    CPU: Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton) w/ 512K L2 cache ($134)
    Heatsink/CPU Fan: Thermaltake Volcano 11+ (A1725) ($39)
    RAM: Samsung 512MB PC-3200 DDR400 SDRAM ($140)
    Hard Drive: Maxtor 40.0GB ($86)
Video Card: ASUS V9520 Magic GeForce FX 5200 128MB ($107)
    CD-ROM: AOpen 56X OEM ($31)
Floppy Drive: Panasonic 1.44MB Floppy Disk Drive OEM ($15)
    SUBTOTAL: $810
    TOTAL: $866.70 + S/H

Prices are in Canadian dollars, all are from canadacomputers.com (BTW, these guys are great, awesome prices, amazing customer service).

Not bad.. I'd spend a little more for a bigger hard drive and replace the mobo with an Asus A7N8X non deluxe or the ABIT NF7-S.
Yeah I know, it's like $50+ more for the nForce2 boards but I still like them better over the KT400a.
You can double your hard drive space for another $27.

The videocard isn't great either but hey.. if you're not gonna game much then it's fine.

I agree about canadacomputers.. they probably have the best prices.

looks like a nice setup. you should consider a bigger hard drive, you get a better GB to dollar ratio that way. that case is awesome IMO.

Regarding the hard drive, I would go smaller if I could actually (tough to find anything smaller than 30 or 40 gigs these days). Right now I'm only using about 60% of my 12 gig, and that includes a couple gigs of MP3's, which I'll move over to the extra drive I'll have if I get a new computer (a little 3.2 gig that's my Windows drive right now).

D3aC0n: I don't know much about these things, what's the difference between an nForce2 board and a KT400a board? I've seen the markings, but I don't really get what they mean. Also, I know the video card isn't great, but the most video-card-intensive thing I do is watching videos, so I figure it'll work fine for me (this machine is mostly used for everyday surfing/office stuff, music, and programming).

The only thing I have been thinking about is maybe going with slower RAM but getting twice as much... 512 isn't a whole lot these days... Any thoughts on this?

Thanks for the comments guys. I'll let you know what I come up with and post pics whenever I have something to post pics of ;)

You'll be fine with the KT400a really.
KT400a and nForce2 are the chipset models of the motherboard. nForce2's generally perform better than the 400a's.

Oh, OK thanks. Yea, I like that one, good price, fast FSB, builtin sound and LAN. Works for me.

Any thoughts on the RAM thing anyone?

Sounds good to me.. since your Barton CPU is 333 FSB, you'll want at least PC2700 RAM. So going from PC3200 to PC2700 should be fine

you could buy a 120 gb hd for $15 more. you said you wont use it, but why not buy it for a little extra in case you ever do want it?

Where? All the 120's I see on canadacomputers.com are in the $150 range. Note that I can't order from NewEgg cause I'm in Canada ;)

As for the RAM, I'm undecided... Even if I go down to PC2700 it's still a fair bit more to get 2x512... Not sure if it's worth $236 to have a gig of ram in there.

Meh, for lots of things canadacomputers is actually cheaper after exchange. After shipping it's probably even a better deal. Plus they do COD (awesomest way of paying ever).

Any more suggestions? If no one else can think of anything then I think I have it about right, and I'll inquire about shipping costs and order it in the next couple weeks.

Go with the Asus A7N8X Deluxe - it's MUCH better than the GB board, and you'll run into less issues with it since it's very popular in the gaming community (read: "Those that bitch and moan at manufacturers when ANY bug rears its little head")

This one is only $6 more than the GB one, is it what you're talking about? If so, I'll go for it.

For $183? Nope. I will go for that A7N8X-X though, I figure I may as well have the option of a 400MHz FSB in case I want to upgrade to a faster chip in a couple years, and since it was mentioned above that the nForce2 chipset is better.

So, I emailed them to ask about shipping today (after shopping around locally for cheaper prices, which I didn't find). So, by tomorrow afternoon I figure I'll know the total cost and decide to:
    a) do it now
    b) do it after next paycheck (so I feel better about it)
    c) do it after christmas/birthday

I was thinking about getting another stick of RAM too. What I'm thinking right now is that I'll go with one 512 for now, and when I have more money (or maybe christmas/birthday) I'll buy another 512.

BTW, what is a dual-channel memory configuration?

Ah OK. I'll stick with the current plan then, cause for now this computer is going to feel crazy-fast anyway (moving up from a PIII 500MHz with 128MB), and in a few months/a year when I can afford another 512 I'll just be starting to get used to the speed and it'll be nice to have something faster again :bigthumb:
