I was wondering where to start with comics?? I like a few of the established super heroes Spiderman, or Captain America or even Batman, but I am not sure where to start, I was looking for something like a collection of the early comics if that exists. This was the only forum I thought this question was appropriate in.

stay away from DC, they make it incredibly hard for someone to jump into

If you insist on DC, I'd say start with Infinite Crisis, but I would also suggest staying away from DC to start. Kingdom come, and Tower of Babel are also great story lines.

If you like Spiderman, and I know I'll probably get crap from purists over this, start with the Ultimate Spiderman series. The whole Ultimate universe was created just so that people could start fresh with known characters, without 30+ years of convoluted backstory. Ultimate Spiderman is very similar to old Spiderman, but he's a bit younger, and it's a lot funnier. They also jump into some story lines you may be familiar with if you watched the 90s animated Spiderman.

Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps are great right now (yes... DC)

Captain America is only up in the 30's and is a great book as well.

Ironman has an ultimate run as well, thought I've only read the first 5 comics for it. It seemed interesting.

IMO, stay away from a LCBS for right now, just grab a bunch of older stuff on bittorrent or ElephantDrive. Like everyone else has said, Walking Dead is a great book, at 47 issues now and Invincible is a new superhero book in a new universe, great story, only at issue 49 i believe.

If you want to try and get into some DC stuff, like the Green Lantern stuff which is great right now, check out Rebirth, came out a couple years ago, and follow up to the current arcs.

Planet Hulk was great, World War Hulk was good but the end was a bit disappointing.

You can check out the new Spiderman books, since 3 times a month, and they pretty much erased the last 30 years of continuity, so you should be set!

There is a lot of older stuff, or stuff that just finished that is incredible. Y: The Last Man is incredible and just ended, and the Watchmen is a must read. I just started reading Transmetropolitan, and its insane but I love it.

I honestly don't know where to start with Batman, good luck with that.

What sparked your interest in comics? Read a couple issues? Movies? Cartoons? Might be able to give better suggestions if I knew your taste.

Get the Omnibus from Amazon.com or download some issues online. I really gotta recommend starting from issue 1 with Captain America. Each issue reads like a bad ass espionage movie. This run on Captain America combined with the Sinestro Corps war in Green Lantern pretty much got me back in to comics after like a 15 year hiatus.

I read a lot of manga and a friend of mine have the civil war issues in his room and I read two of them and got really interested so I may just buy the novel versions of those and check out the ultimate version of Iron Man and a couple of these other suggestions

you'll be done with ultimate iron man within an hour, it's only a mini series (and not terribly entertaining).

start on ultimate spiderman #1 and keep going, you'll love it

    UFF is decent
    UXmen is hit or miss
Ultimates 1 was amazing, 2 was meh, 3 is garbage so far
ultimate iron man is an interesting backstory but severely devoid of ass kicking
ultimate wolverine vs hulk was a train wreck
the ultimate galactus series was pretty tight

    miss anything?

never read the daredevil and elektra series' because i despise them
