Anyone else here have a canon 50mm 1.4? I just picked this one up used and have been kinda noticing some strange color shifts when shooting wide open and up close. Here's an example of what i'm seeing. This is a 100% crop from the original. I focused on the caps lock button, and notice the green and magenta color casts in opposite directions. Is there something wrong w/ my lens, or is this a known issue w/ this lens?

chromatic abberations. i think this is usually more of an issue shooting wide open. but this is also usually a factor in the quality of a lens that a lot of people overlook. but it does look pretty bad in this shot.

That does seem a bit excessive for the lighting, guess you know why they sold it.

    yeah, that sucks... :hsd:

    definitely chromatic aberration though...

You should be able to get rid of or at least reduce it in post. Find the chromatic aberration in LR and turn defringe on for all edges...

That's pretty normal for a 50mm/1.4 at 100% crop. Longitudinal chromatic aberrations can be reduced pretty easily and effectively in Adobe Camera RAW though.

LoCA generally gets worse with faster lenses. The 1.4 is a better lens in just about every category than the 1.8 though. Try the CA sliders in ACR before giving up hope. Plus, this is a 100% crop, so it's not going to be that noticeable in a reasonably-sized print.

Hmm, alright i'll try playing w/ the CA sliders sometime. But there's no way i could give a client a file that was this bad. but then again, i wouldn't be shooting at 1.4 for a client either lol.

edit: on another note. That first picture made me all disgusted at my keyboard, so i had to go and do a thorough cleaning of it. Now it's nice and clean :) lol

usually, at least from my experience, you either get the purple fringe, or the yellowish/green fringe but you got both. weird.

I gotta say, overall, the 50 1.4 is the biggest disappointment lens I have owned to date. :hs:
