well the title says most of what im considering...

    however, there are some specifics:

if I were to enlist, say into the Army or Marine reserves, would i be able to go through basic during the summer, and return to college to finish my last year, and then once i graduate, apply to OCS?

I have a little over one year left (grad. june 08)...and I really want to become an officer, however, I'm getting really bored and was thinking of enlisting into the reserves and going through basic this summer, spending my final year in college and going to drills when required, and then applying to OCS once i graduate and switch from reserves to active duty.

hrmm...what branch are you in out of curiosity?

from what ive read/seen on the news it seems that Army Reserves are the ones getting called up, but does anyone in the Marines have any input?

And the reason i ask about the two branches, is becuase I have totally decided which branch i want to get into...yet.

you must be kidding in thinking that marines stay put.

the contract you're thinking of is called a 92-day reservist. meaning out of a year you're only allowed to drill for 92 days and is a special contract option. in boot camp you will only be there for 92 days instead of the normal 13 weeks for others.

afterwhich you will report to your local reserve station for drill like normal but instead of going 2 weeks for extended drill you will be going back to marine combat training and then your MOS school.

can you then try out for OCS? yes. that will be in lieu of your summer training.

    what's wrong with this option?

if you don't finish boot camp in 92 days you're fucked.

if you don't finish school with your degree you're fucked.

if you don't earn your comission then you're fucked.

but regardless you become a marine.

    yay!

Agreed. If you want to be an officer, then jsut go to OCS. If you are bored during the summer, then run your ass of so you can make it through OCs. Gen. Conway just put something in the pipeline that says every Marine will go to Iraq. Just take your time, enjoy college, and youll still eventually do what you want to do. Theking and kidhero (I thin they are both in college) are the deployment specialist for the Marines in this forum. I'd jsut do what he says since he comes from the enlisted and college side where you are coming from.

edit: I think kidhero is a college reservist too

    alrite, thanks guys.

kidhero, i didnt mean that the marines werent going to iraq, i just keep hearing about how army reservists are constantly being called up...

as for going to iraq, i know by joining into the military at this time would being asking for a one way ticket over there, thats not that big a deal for me, personally, i would much rather go than train and train and never put my training to use.

because you don't stay as long :hsugh:

it is usually a round-trip ticket. :hs:

    :werd:
That's how I felt after I got out of the air force, and a large part of the reason I re-enlisted into the Army.

It's nobody's fault. But it is probably a reason why you hear more Army complaints about deploying. There are more of them deployed, and for longer, than Marines.

I'm not saying either branch is better or worse than the other. just stating a reason why you might hear more bitching from one.

I want to join Air Force intelligence or something similar. In high school I was one signature away from getting the ball rolling but decided against it at the last second. I'm beginning to regret that because college is so unfullfilling to me. I'm really tired of looking 5 years into the future and seeing myself at a desk job at an insurance company or studying for my next actuarial exam. The only problem is I need to get into shape. I really got out of shape the past few years.

Any suggestions what I should look into? How long does it take to get into shape to survive all the training?

If you decide on Army, join your state's National Guard rather than the Reserves. Better benefits and you might be able to get your student loans paid if you have any.

Also, there are jobs in the Army that you could get done in a summer. Infantry can be done in a summer.
