I'm running Vista, the software from Mpix doesn't work :( Anything else I can run on Vista that is good? I'd need to print out somewhere like Mpix.

Edit: nm, I have InDesign,, I think I'll give that a try :o

Also, I want a book with the cover art printed directly on the cover, not just a dust cover. I'm looking at Blurb and they have dust covers. Anyone know if they print directly on the cover as well?

WHCC, My Publisher, Shutterfly all do them

InDesign is awesome, and I have a bunch of 10x10 full page spread tempaltes

But spend some time checking out the different vendors. Asuka and sharedink are popular for their quality, but may require showing proof that you're a pro, like a website and website email kinda thing

    many vendors:
    http://forums.offtopic.com/showpost.php?p=87016454&postcount=3

many do multiple kinds, like white wedding album, zook book, graphi etc, so don't be fooled by the big ticket items on their sites

Okay, I've been going through all the vendors and pretty much all the medium and up require logins to get pricing or more detailed information. What is the best size to go with? I was thinking a letter size landscape, but you said you use 10"x10". I can't really get started on this without figuring out all my bleeds and sizes.

just personal preference. I have my first portrait size coming from italy right now (Graphi).

I know Jim (vw_pilot) really likes the shared ink and I don't believe they need a login in :hs:

Shared Ink will allow you to put a photo directly on the cover, though not on the entire cover (like a 4x6 area within it) but it is on the cover.

They will also allow you to print without their branding logo on the book in any way if you join their photographers program which you can try free for 45 days and have full access.

Blurb only does dust jackets as does WHCC.

You could look into vio vio. Someone I know just did wire bound portfolios with them and they printed on the cover I believe (his was mainly black with his name and such on it, but I think it was a full printing).

just finished my Blurb book, and to be honest, it was a lot of fun. quite a bit of work just for 32 pages, but oh well.

kinda wished they had more templates, but again, oh well.

"flickr07" will get you $10 off, so a 20-40 page hardcover book with NO BLURB LOGOS is under $40 shipped. not bad at all for a simple gift.

I think I'll probably make another one for my nephew for christmas if this one turns out okay.

i'll take pics of it when i get it.

Does it let you do full page images? Bleed to bleed type of stuff. I'd like to do some of the stuff that they do in a lot of wedding books, a larg image in the background, faded and an image overlay on it. Think Blurb has that kind of stuff for me? If not, I think I've set my mind on InDesign or Photoshop.

yep, you just make a large image (whatever the dimensions are for 2 pages), then cut the image in half. it'll print on the whole page.

go on blurb and look at books other people have made. there are some great ideas in there.

otherwise, if there isn't a template for what you want, just make an image how you want it in PS and upload it. :dunno:

blurb is completely free until you want to buy it, so just go try it out

I noticed they say "dust cover" as the cover for the hardbacks. Does that mean they don't print directly on the front?

Yeah. The book is most likely a linen type material and the dust cover is the glossy cover like you would get on most hard cover novels.
