    Anybody in the Coast Guard?
I'm thinking of signing up, getting a bit tired of sitting behind a desk 8 hours a day. I would like to do something diffrent, and would also like to go back to school so figuring I could kill two bird with one stone:dunno:

I know the pay is not going to be near what I'm making, but to do something diffrent, possibly see new things, and maybe get my life together would be worth it I think.

Anyone have any expriences, tips, etc?:x:

What is making you lean towards the CG?

Fact that they are more homeland than anything else, I'm kind of interested in what they do. Boarding ships for inspection, rescue swimming, those type of missions.

Thanks for the info, the wait might be good for me would give me time to get in better shape as well. I'm 24 so I would be getting out at about the same time which is fine with me as long as I'm moving forward in life. Right now I just feel bored and like I'm not making any progress.

I would be lying if I said I wasn't also interested in whatever sign on bonus and school they offered as well:o so I'll have to be sure to ask about those.

But given the chance to do something diffrent daily, get a degree and serve the country beats the 9-5 grind in my opinion:hsd:

You can't enlist as a rescue swimmer and there are only ~300 in the whole USCG, the attrition rates of rescue swimmer training are on par with BUD/S. Be realistic with your expectations.

There's a good article on about.com about it.

Yeah true, I think if I got enough so that I could bring the loan down on my car enough to sell it, then use whatever was left to pay off old school loans/CC bills. That way the only thing I'm left paying is rent until my lease is up that would be enough to make me sign up:noes:

Doing new things, getting my degree and just saving money:dunno:

I was just throwing some ideas out there, I need to look more into the jobs and try and decide what looks good to me, I figure I'll talk to a recruiter some time this week.

I have my helicopter pilots liscence, and was looking at joining up to fly either the HH-60 Jayhawk of the HH-65 Dolphin. Its not easy, most CG pilots are veterans who have some serious stick time.:x:

Visited the recruiter today, looks like it will be around January/Feb before I sign up, I have to lose some weight first.
