What lenses would you use in a club? I'm saying 17-40L, my boss is saying 50mm 1.4, which would you use?

I was told the flash was the most important piece of equipment.

Dancing pics are cool with the flash or LED light.

on a crop body? you won't have enough room to use a 50 for anything other than head shots

    definitely 16-35/17-40 with a flash

^^^ yea, 50 won't be anywhere wide enough. and I would do flash + 1/4 to 1/2 sec. shutter speed if it's really dark with light points, but it depends what kind of shots you're going for.

yep. i was trying something to isolate the couple. When i sawthe shot, i had my 15 fish mounted on the 5d, and was very sad about it. so i shot it anyway and tried my best to try something different.

the reason i would not use flash is that it isnt the same lighting as the rest of the scene. usually theres some high contrast lighting going on, colored etc and the flash would have this ugly white cast unless you had a gel.

again with getting creative with it. dont just shoot a bare straight on flash. its going to kill the image. but youre gunna want the flash to freeze the people in the photo, and let the shutter drag on the get the ambient light.

Since turbodude hasn't posted it ... he did a really good write-up on club photography a while back.

    http://forums.offtopic.com/showthread.php?t=4046654

I always took note of this because he uses a Sigma 24-60/2.8, that's the same medium zoom I use ... cheap, sharp lens ftw

Somehow my shots don't look anywhere near as good though :wtc:

yes.. 50 will be unusable at a crowded club. Flash is also a must (for bounce) or diffuser. i used a 17-55 2.8 on my d80

This is being used with a 5D, not my 40D.

when i used a crop body i had a 18-50 2.8. now that i have a FF 5d, i often use either my 16-35 or my 24-60 depending on which club im at.

If its a small venue that's always packed I use wider, if its a pretty big club where i can get a good amount of distance i use 24-60.

and i use my 28-70land 70-200 for red carpets.

wow, what clubs do you go to? Are they located in a wide open field during the day?

50mm is way too much for a club...you need a wide angle (crop-12-18 on the wide end; FF-18-24 on the wide end) and you need a flash for most shots.

If you want to capture the entire club as a whole, lose the flash. If you want to capture people, you HAVE to use the flash. You can try to get creative, but you definitely need a flash. And you're not using the flash at full power w/ a 1/60 shutter...you need to open it up a little longer w/ partial flash to keep the subject still but the background going.
